I just purchased a used 2007 Outlander XLS 4WD with 4k miles on it.  I was wondering how accurate to trip computer MPG is.  My last trip the cpu stated 35.5mpg over a 40 mile drive with an avg speed of 54mph.  So far I've got 290 miles on the tank and the cpu is stating I still have 180 miles left.

BTW - This crossover rocks!  I'm glad I purchased it over a RAV4 v6 Sport.

It's accurate - I have done some testing with an external GPS and was actually surprised how accurate it is.  That said, your numbers are incredible.  Either you drive like an old granny or you must be coasting a lot, LOL!  J/K let us know if your numbers hold up over the longer term.

BTW, welcome!

35.5 mpg god damn. Where you drafting an 18 wheeler?

I'm going to refill the gas tank later today to see what I really got on avg over 300 plus miles.  I wasn't drafting.  Just driving like a granny slow to speed up, and lots of coasting in 2WD.  Most of the time I was driving around 57mph.  Whenever I get a new car I like to see what kind of MPG I can get out of it.   On this tank I've seen 35.5,34.3, 33.7, 31.2, 28.5, and 22.3 (evil traffic avg 17 mph over 40 miles).  If my Outlander gets me 27 mpg on avg (90% highway @ 60),  I'll be more than happy.

You should get that MPG pretty easily.

Got 29.85mpg avg on the first tank. Yes!

Mine's been within 0.5 MPG at every fill-up; and yes, I do check at every fill-up.

375.5 miles with 2nd tank.  Took 12.72 gallons to refill.

25.8 MPG on the recent 550 mile trip, averaging 73 mph with the A/C kickin the whole way.  AND the first half of the drive was hrough the mountains.  Not too shabby!

I pulled off 27 MPG going 75MPH..drafting (from a safe distance) a horse trailer.  If I got out of the draft it was about 23MPG.

I can get about 30-31 going 55MPH if there's no headwind.

I was able to get 37.6 mpg today driving into work.  Saw a high or 38.2 before getting off the highway.  Then drove ~5 miles into the city (25-30mph).

How on earth are any of you getting these numbers?  On my first accurately measured tank I got 21.5 MPG driving like an old man and nothing in the car.  My daily commute is 14 miles one way, and almost completely flat except for 1/8 mile up hill just before my house (which is of course downhill going to work so it should be a wash).  I have 4 miles of city driving (3 at the start, 1 at the finish) and 10 miles of full speed freeway in between.  Being geriatric gental on the throttle and driving the speed limit (65mph here on the freeway) everywhere yielded this average.  Weekday commute milage goes as high as 24MPG, but weekends vary a lot.

How, how, how?

My MPG always resets when I turn off the car. Also the miles until empty changes as my driving habits change.

How do I have the MPG computer keep the info after I turn off the car? And is there a way to have the miles until empty just calculate it based on your average? I hate it changing fomr like 140 miles to 100 miles in like 5 minutes. :(

I drive 40 miles each way drop about 1300 feet over the 40 miles (avg 35mpg), going home (up hill 27mpg).  I read traffic, don't hit the brakes (drop the Outlander in N).  I can hit the lights in town driving 30 mph so I'm in 5th gear or sometime 6th gear.  It's like a game to me. I've never had less then 22mpg and that was in stop and go rush hour traffic avg speed over 40 miles was 17mph.

Ah, I see.  My commute is actually too flat, too short, and too uncongested (no traffic to read, only 5 lights on my entire drive).  So given that and assuming everything I stated before is acurate, am I seeing bad numbers here or is 21/22 normal for those conditions? Could the fact I only have  about 650 miles on the engine have anything to do with it?

Now that I examine my commute, I'm not sure I should even be complaining.

There actually is a way.  I know I read something about it being in the Settings menu on the computer.  It automatically resets your data after the car has been off for 4 hours.  It can be set to maual trip though.  I know it's in the book for sure.

My drive to work is 4 miles and no lights. I have to stop at 1 stop sign and thats it. I only manage 19.5 to 20.5 mpg. The speeds are 25 and 35 mph.

Thanks number6! The manual is so thick, I dread having to look through it, but I'll check it out.

Meh.  That's what the "throne" is for.

I would think you'll see your mpg increase 10% over the next 2000 miles or so.  Leaving work the first five miles suck lots of stop and go in the city and 20 lights. I'm lucky to see 21mpg on the trip computer.

I'd say that is information that would have been pertinant when making your original claim of 38mpg.  You certainly got some people excited.  Next folks will want to buy a tornado for the air inlet and some magnets for the fuel lines to try to keep up with you.

Driving on I25 in Denver I still can get ~35mpg driving 50-55mph.  The last three tanks I've got an avg 29.5mpg over 1200 miles.  Yesterday round trip I got 33.4 mpg over those 80 miles (uphill and downhill).   On flat land my 07 outlander will pull ~1200 rpms doing 40mph.  To get over 28mpg you really have to work at it (reading traffic, slope of the road, drop in N at stops, etc).  As I said before it's a game to me. Most people will never see this kind of MPG from their outlander because it takes effort > hypermiling...

The best numbers I have seen were: displayed on the dash, 29. something and actual MPG calculated by miles driven divided by however many gallons I put on the fill up was about 26.5, so the trip comp was a bit off. Remember the trip comp calculates only how you are doing in the present mostly, it wont be able to tell how many stop signs your about to encounter. By the way those numbers were from a trip to virginia from NC, I drove 150 miles up and 150 down plus a few other city miles, but mostly highway. ESM you have to tell me what you are running on, oil? gas? mods???, these are the bext numbers I've seen on mine and thats driving like my grandma. I do the same as you, predict the stop lights and signs and just let the car slow down by it self and accelerate slowlly. by the way I have 3000 miles on mine.

No not hypermiling...its holding up traffic

This thread makes me cry. Im an aceleration freak and I get terrible gas mileage because I cant keep my foot out of it. But then even a trip to the grocery store is a ride through the twisties it handles so spectacular I cant help myself.

If I get the chance to take it on the freeway it shows around 26 on the display. But then I promptly ruin that when I get back into traffic.

No not hypermiling...its holding up traffic   - That's funny
I don't really impact traffic since I stay in the right lane and there are two or three other lanes for faster traffic.  Before I purchased my 07 Outlander, I drove an Audi S4 at or above the speed limit.  So I understand, It's hard driving 55mph in such a sporty crossover.  But on my last tank of gas (over 407 miles) I got 30.1mpg...  In my Audi I was luck to see 22mpg on 91-93 octane, but that the price you pay to be in boost.

No mods, or other crap.  I do plan to switch to mobil1 at my next oil change.  I just drive based on the real time mpg bar and adjust my gas input to stay at 25mpg or greater (only at take off, and hills do I drop below that for any period of time)
