Has anyone here done it, heard about it. I am in the process of doing it so just wondering.
Any opinions or knowledge would be good.
Well, I did something like that swap. I have a Spyder GS(can you tell?) that came with a 4g64 2.4l engine stock. I already did a head swap from the 1g 4g63's because my car came with a SOHC head. So now it's basically the same as a stroked 4g63. Minus the turbo parts because i'm poor and can't afford to buy all the conversion parts yet. Anyways, uhhh...you have an eclipse gs, right? If a\it's a spyder, then your in luck and can do what i did. If it's not a spyder, then you'll have to take another route. The non-turbo versions of the hardtop eclipse's came with a chrylser engine that is in no way related to eclipse turbo except for the fact that it's in an eclipse body. None of the engine parts, sensor, gauges, transmission parts or even axles are the same or compatible. I use to have a 97 non-turbo talon which was the same as your eclipse and have thought about swapping to a turbo engine. Turns out it's way more difficult and expensive than you can imagine. It's not like swapping a honda engine or small block chevy engine, those are both easy(relatively). It would be like swapping a chevy engine into a honda actually. Not feasible, and definitely not worth it.
But you are in luck. Chrysler did make a 2.4 variant of your engine(420a is the engine code, look under the hood and a sticker should have engine code on there) As a matter of fact, the dodge neon srt4 is using it right now. That engine is also turbocharged and is making around 250whp using a mitsu turbo. As to whether the engine will drop into the eclipse chasis, i don't know. But Dodge did make a few cars and vans with 2.4l 420A. The most prevalant and easist to find, not to mention cheapest, is in the dodge caravan. I'ts probably best to find a wrecked caravan made in the 90's since the n/t eclipse's shared the same block as them. You will have to use a timing belt from a 2.4l dohc caravan though, so best to do the block swap when you're ready to do a T-belt job. As for the turbo, honostly, in my opinion, you don't need anywhere close to a t3/t4. For your engine combo, a t3/t4 would spool up rather quickly. It's like putting a 20g on an mk4 supra, It's not undersized but it's you're going to realize the full potential of the engine itself. T3/t4 are good for undersized Honda's that can't make any torque. For you're massive 2.4l you'll need at *minimum* a 14b mitsu turbo. The recommended turbo is a big 16g, like the one used in the srt4. If you want a hi-po combo, use a 20g. But get a built bottom end first, no sense in spending close to $5000 just to have a piston shatter and destroy you're $2000 turbo, manifold, and exhaust system. good luck
