ok, so you do have mods. uhm get a the turbo first, really the cams arent going to do much for you...... but if you do, get 264 intake side, 272 exhaust side, look on youtube for vids

264s are a joke, they really are for that kinda money. if you get cams, get 272s they dont have idle problems like some people think you just need an safc

I'm not big on 272s.  DTA, you seem to be on the side of the 272s, lol.  I've read both sides and I'll take the 264/264 for street and 264/272 or 272/272 for 1/4 mile tracks.  I don't consider those DD cams.  They would just annoy the hell out of me. Seriously, if you need more air up top, then cams would be beneficial.  From every thread on Tuner's and Talk that I've read, you lose low to lower mid range power but gain upper mids to higher range power with 272s.
Here's a few vids for you OP, if you haven't already checked some out.
272s

FP2/272 - this is probably the best sounding idle out of all of these.  FP2s are similar to the 272s but cheaper.

272s

HKS 264/272

Another HKS 264/272

I still dream of twisties over a straight track so cams aren't in my future mod list, so I'm biased against them at this moment, but if I were to get some, it would most likely be Forced Performances cams.  Their grind seems to produce smoother idles than HKS, Crower.

you are correct that you lose some bottom end with the 272s, but any cams that actually make a diference will do that. You dont spend $600 on cams, plus install, tuning, springs, retainer etc just to gain a few hp, thats why I think its a joke to spend that kind of money on 264s.If you are gonna drop $1000 it should be for a big defference, and people who want cams should know and expect that they are going to be revving higher to make power. But for daily driving 272s arent as bad as some say when tuned well. My friuend had 272s in his 1g gst and it drove perfectly fine as a daily, you can even take away most of the lumpy idle with the safc if you want. All that being said, i never had cams an didnt want them so you can take this with a grain of salt if youd like

No, no, no.  I know see exactly what you're saying DTA and I agree if I had a large turbo or was planning for it.  I don't see the 264s as a waste though, adjustable cam gears I see as a waste of time and money on stock cams, but not aftermarket cams.
IMO, if you're having to rev it that high to hit peak power off your turbo, it's not a DD, it's a track car (referrencing 272s).
I don't have cams either and I don't really plan to either.  I can tell you from a lot that I've researched is that 272/272 combo is a waste and a stupid waste of time and money on anything smaller than a 50trim turbo.
