Alright, my buddy has a 2G eclipse and he started having problems with his car the other day. His problem is when he turns his car on and lets it run, there's a banging noise like something being slung around inside the engine. What could be his problem, and a cost for fixing it. I believe it sounds like a cylinder hitting hard but I don't know. The problem is located in the back left side of the engine, if that helps.

Ill attempt to assist here, just finished restoring my 3000gt,but have restored 4 talons, two eclipses, and one turbo laser,is this engine the 2.0 4 cylinder?Turbo or not,if its not the 4 banger what is it?

It's the 2.0 Liter 4 banger, non turbo. The only thing done to it is CAI ,cat back, and lowered. So what's the possible cause of this seemingly dangerous clanging noise?

Three of the 4 dsms Ive restored had #1 rod broken, this is the far left cylinder facing the engine,If I had my guess hes spun a rod bearing on the #1 rod.Im not sure as to exactly why these rods in my cars were broken,as one was because a rod bearing siezed up,and tore up the crank as well as the rod,the other one was ok bearing wise, but the rod was twisted and broken in half about an inch up from the crankshaft.the fourth totally destroyed the crank, block and head when it went. This may have something to do with this cylinder being at the end of the oiling chain, maybe the most stressed cylinder,I dont know.I DO know that from what youve described id seriously suspect something in the area of the #1 cylinder assy...Have him pull the pan, drop the #1 rod cap and inspect it...If it looks and feels ok,he can retorque the cap,and put the pan back on...let me know what you find.....

Does the sounds change at all when he hits the gas. Like does it get quicker at all. Is it more of a ticking than a knocking?

I don't remember if it got quicker when he hit the gas, but it's more of a tinking sound than a knocking sound. It'll be prolly another day till I can get ahold of him again. The strangest thing is there is no service engine soon light, the temp is normal, and the RPM's are steady.

420a=garbage. Not worth the effort... drive it till it drops and pick up a 4g63t.

That sounds like un unlubricated valve, Go to your an auto-store and ask for valve oil, pour it into the head and see if it goes away. Hopefully that's it. If not, your looking at a very expensive fix. Including whole bottom end rebuild.
Good luck
