It really depends on what you can find.  I like the second and third generation models, but you should look for good condition and low miles.  I really like my '95 VR-4, but I was looking for a newer model and or a Spyder.  My car is so new looking, I had to buy it (even if I did have to ship it across the country).

well it really depends on what you want and what are you planning to do with it?
and it depends also on your age? http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=508150 <<<< read this
as far as years go, it depends on your taste of the body style

Depends on your budget. Bascally the newer the better. The best model is the 99 VR4

What makes the 99's the "best" models?

Well i said the VR4. I say that because it had the least problems according to the people on 3si

How can it have less problems...it is the same car...mechanically of course.
It may appear to have less problems because their are fewer of them.
Many on 3si do feel the 99 is the most desirable to own because of the low production numbers...

anything past 94 are better overall.

you get the 4 bolt block, the forged crank, the 6 speed (with larger transfer shaft), and more HP. (assuming you're buying a VR4).

you get a smattering of those pre-94, but not all.

+1 its the same as every other 2nd gen....my personal favorite is the 99 vr-4 though...the 98 vr-4's are the rarest correct?

In my opinion, it's much like buying a camcorder or a computer.  They are all almost the same and perform the same basic functions, but at the same time each have little nuances that make them different.

As for the 2nd gens having more HP: The more HP is related to the boost solenoid. First gens can do the free boost mod: http://www.stealth316.com/2-freeboost.htm So I don't think that counts as making them a better choice

The rest is just your preference.  I happen to like to tailor my car to what *I* like.  I have a 93 VR-4 with a 99 conversion.  On the outside, it looks like the 99 (minus the combat wing).  I have the 25 spline output shaft, forged crank, 4 bolt main, first gen ECU, 5speed, etc.

What I think is most important is finding a car that was well taken care of, drives well, and fits your "plan" and budget.

i didnt read all the posts but my favorite is the 93 models they are the best before mitsubishi droped hp and changed the body style into 1 i wish they didnt.  although i would give anything to have a 99.

and how else thinks that in 2010 mitsubishi should make a special edition 3000gt and only make 2010 of them that would be the badest thing ever.

I agree with VR4Jess. I have a 92 VR4 with a the newer projector head lights and pitroad body kit. I opped for the the 1st gen 5 speed beause it was so much cheaper and I could build it the way I wanted.  But what ever you do make sure you are happy with your choice.

The only mechincial difference between 2nd and 3rd gen VR4's is the lifters...

not sure why you think mitsu "dropped" horsepower;  They actually went UP from 93 to 94 from 300 to 320.
And you get the 6 speed.
and you get the 4 bolt block with forged crankshaft (neither of which was on the 92).
