Hi everyone, just bought a 95 3kgt base, and have noticed that the oil pressure guage seems to run low. During engine load, such as cruising the oil pressure reads fine, in between the two tick marks on the guage. But I have noticed that when idling after the engine is warm the guage reads low, about at 1/5 to 1/4 of the guage. Is this normal for the pressure to drop while idling or driving gently or does this indicate a problem? If so, any ideas as to what the problem may be? Thanks in advance.

I have a 94 it is a standard problem, but doesnt seem to cause any damage. I use synthetic oil with a quart of Lucas oil each time I change my oil it seems to give better oil pressure and eases the lifter knocking on start up.

Synthetic oil is the way to go I use Amsiol Racing and Lucas in a high milage motor. If it is winter where you are you may want to drop the Lucas for the winter and run straight Synth Oil. The reason is the Lucas makes the oil thicker and unless you let the engine warm up for 20-30 minutes you are not really getting the oil moving as it should. In the summer it is great and here in Florida where it is warm year around Lucas is good. If you run regular dinosaur oil Lucas also makes an additive for that and it is half the price of the synthetic additive about $7.50 a quart $15.00 for synthetic.

IT IS NORMAL FOR THE OIL PRESSURE GAUGE TO DO THAT. IF YOU HAVE AN OWNERS MANUAL IT WILL TELL YOU THAT WHEN YOUR AT A COMPLE STOP THE NEEDLE WILL DROP.
AS SOON AS YOU START DRIVING AGAIN IT WILL RISE. SO DONT WORRY. I HAVE A 94 SL AND I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING.

same issue. i have a 98 base model 3000GT (auto, no mods, no turbo) shoc v6 but i'm loosing alot of oil under the hood. dont know if its the manifold or whatever. sounds like this is normal tho.

all engines, regardless of manufacturer or country of origin have less oil pressure at idle. The oil pump is spinning slower, naturally producing less pressure.
the normal operating range of pressure for a mitsu is about 15psi (warm at idle) to 100 psi (cold, higher RPMs).
as long as you have clean oil in your crankcase, you'll be fine.
