So i just picked up a 93 vr-4 and when i went to test drove it everything felt great and there were no red flags. However after i picked it up the next day and drove about the 10 miles i went to downshift to 3rd and it grinded really bad. The car was meticulously taken care of, has 99k on the clock and the clutch is only 20k old. All the other gears feel great and I''m going to flush the tranny oil but whats the ballpark price for gettin a synchro fixed?

just checked alldatapro. They list the trans cost at $4999.00 plus labor
and it didn''t give an option of 5 or 6 speed. OUCH.... good luck!

Just to clarify and add what Manybrews said- you cannot get parts from the dealership as the dealership considers the Getrag tranny non servicable and should be replaced as a unit. BUT- there are lots of aftermarket support now from other vendors aside from the dealer where you actually can get internal parts or even a rebuild service such as
http://www.kormextrans.com/.
Many owners have found certain gear oils can give their transmissions relief from the occasional grind. I''ve used Pennzoil Synchomesh with excellent results for a 2nd gear grind when i 1st bought my VR4. It hasn''t grinded since in 2 years and still shifts smooth as butter. Others have used Royal Purple Synchomax. Give it a shot.. you have nothing to loose really.
