It depends really what your going for. If your gonna race it a lot, a lot of people will tell u stick. I preffer stick over auto b/c I like controlling what gear I'm in and gas milage is better w/ stick.

There is a big difference. The auto has different gear ratios that make the car a lot slower. Also, the gas mileage is a lot more controlable with a manual anyways.
I would say auto only if you have some kind of injury to your left leg and your incapable of using it. Or, if you are running a 1200hp drag car and you run in competitions and need the consistancy.
In terms of fun, safety, practicality, manual 100%.
Consistancy, auto. Thats all.
Up to you!

its all up to you. There really isnt too much of an advantage either way. Its all about what you want. If you want to shift then go with a manual. If you dont want to be bothered with it then get an auto. Its all opinion

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/ Here is a site to look at the milage you get. I went with auto because I drive across a bridge (stop and go traffic) every day to and from work and I hated clutching to move a couple of feet. If you dont move people zip in front of you,

First off...If you have a car like an Eclipse GS-T (like me) or GS-X, Evo, etc. etc., then you shouldn't worry about gas mileage in one of these cars...THESE CARS ARE SPORTS CARS! THEY ARE BUILT TO RUN AND PERFORM, not really all that much for economy...And if you mod them and build up the performance, your gas mileage is going to go downhill anyway...Mine is a "toy" and not an "every day driver" so it just sits in the garage really except for when I feel like going for a cruise or to a show...I knew when I bought it that I wasn't buying it for the fuel economy, I was buying it for permormance and to build it up more so I had to throw the gas mileage issue out, Ya know what I mean?
Second...Sebba, how is a stick "safer" than an automatic?

I like a stick way better then a auto and if u want to call it safer you can but it always keeps you doing something rather then push gas, push brake. Keeps me more in tune with the road than i am in a auto.

As far as not being able to move quickly, thats your driving lol.
Its safer because you really are more connected to the road, as stated by that dude ^^^. Think about it, you are in a slide, whats the first thing you should do? Put the clutch in.... oh but thats right, you dont have one. Get where im going?

no not really. The first thing you do is tap the brakes...oh thats right both cars have them

. Since when is a clutch a necessity to stopping

Read a driving manual. It say STAY OFF THE BRAKES, put the clutch in, and steer into it

Im gonna have to agree with seb on this one, ive had 5spd and auto before and it actually i beleive made me more alert since ive got a 5spd.

Thats another good point.

Manual all the way for me especially when Driving on Snowy roads in New England
If I slide I put mine on nuetral that means using the clutch not the break. then the car just slide without using anygear. if I brake the car tend to slide more on the snow
TheEngineer

you do know that auto has a nuetral as well right

. I will agree, having a 5spd to me made me alittle more alert in driving, however once again that is still a preference. Alot of people may feel it makes them distracted with shifting. So it can go either way, which brings me back to my first point, there isnt really any advantage either way besides personal preference

Dissagree totally.
How long will it take you to put it in neutral in an emergancy vs putting the clutch in?

" How long will it take you to put it in neutral in an emergancy vs putting the clutch in? "
- neutral is one push up from drive, lol. reaction time of the person..?

I live in northwestern Pennsylvania..we get a ton of snow as well and we have a bunch of hills as well...I've driven automatics here as long as I've been able to drive....as long as the person driving the car in bad weather isn't going like a bat outta hell and you put an auto down into "1" or "2" then they won't have any problems...but I'm with "blamesociety" on this one: it's not the car, it's the person driving the car...It's all about how you are driving and gearing....A stick is cool if you're out racing and beating the crap out of your ride but if you just ride and cruise and not race then an auto is perfectly OK.

Come on seriously, a) your not expecting it to happen, so your body is going to have to acknowledge that it is happening, you are going to have to extend your arm to the shifter, removing partial control of the car because you only have one hand on the wheel.
Vs
Realizing what is happening, and reacting simply by extending your leg.
Its well known that you are more in control of a car with a manual transmission than an auto.

well you know what sebba if your in a serious slide and your heading toward something. The clutch still isnt gonna save you, and the little difference in reaction isnt much. If you havnt experieced it you cant say. Its just as easy to get into an accident with a manual as it is an auto and its just as difficult to stop from getting in one. Believe me if its a bad slide i am willing to bet that 90% of people will have their normal instincts take over and you will hit the brake.

I have been in a slide before. I was driving in england (cant remember what car) i pushed the clutch in and just steered out of it. Dude i grew up amongst successful race car drivers, they taught me everything i know, and what to do when you hit ice is one of them.
Well duh the clutch isnt going to save you. I didnt say that. I said you have more control.

Im still gonna have to stick with Seb on this one even after all the debate. I hydroplaned in my automatic before and came about 1 foot from a tree because i couldnt control it. Then a few weeks ago, in my 5spd i hydroplaned and was able to get control of it. Its just simply having more control of what gear your in, and that wouldnt qualify for an auto truck because its 10 times harder to go into nuetral in a truck than a car, its not just a push, its more of a pull back push up (assuming the shifter is on the side of the steering wheel.

Hydroplaning tells me that you were driving too fast for the conditions. Auto or stick has nothing to do with that.
Something else, there's not a thing you can do if you are sliding on ice not even if you have 4WD.
