I know this post has been beaten to death but I am going to talk about it again.  I have a 98 Mitsubishi 3000GT and am also thinking about doing the swap. I know I need the engine, awd transmission, computer and all accessories. I know I will also need a new rear end for the AWD along with the steering. I am figured on about $6500-$7500 on the complet process but am wondering if anyone else has done this successfully and how it turned out. I know everyone says dont do this but its far cheaper than buying a 98 3000GT vr4. The cheapest I have seen a decent one is around $16,000 and that is with almost 100,000miles.

the 1994-1997 are pretty much the same as the 1998 except for the wheels in 1994. theyre all the 6 speed 320hp engines. instead of spending $6500-7500, sell your 1998 for a good amount. if it's a manual then it'll go for more but if it's sohc it will go less. you can get a fair amount for it as long as the miles are low enough. if you got $12k-13 after selling your car then you can buy a nice 2nd gen vr4. even if it is 2 or 3 years older. it will most likely cost you $7000 just do convert it to awd because it's not just gonna bolt right up there. there's gonna be a lot of custom work and fabricating going on. not to mention that the cheapest i've seen a vr4 engine plus 5 speed tranny with everything else you need is $2200 plus shipping. you won't even get the 6 speed because that tranny doesnt come with a 320hp engine in any jdm package. then you have to buy the rear end and axles and stuff like that which wont be cheap. so figure $7000 just for the awd parts and to have someone install them. $2700 for your engine, tranny, etc. then you have to have someone do the engine swap. now is it really worth doing? i can guarentee that you'll spend over $10k on this easy. if your fimiliar with the nissan 300zx, i know a place that takes your 300zx n/a and does the twin turbo swap to it. they charge $8750. now imagine then having to converti it to awd as well like you'll have to do with the 3000gt.

Yeah its definately freaking expensive..Damn I think you have changed my mind again. Seems like a dumb thing to do when you add it all up. Thanks

those prices are way over inflated... but you get the idea. Basically it will be cheaper just to buy a VR4.

a fwd 3000gt with the vr4 engine will only be faster if ur racing while on the highway or something. if youre at a dead stop, which is what a real race is, then by the time the fwd gets up to speed the vr4 will already be gone. but yea it does work.

I ended up putting the vr4 in mine and just did the fwd, it was actually not all that hard it all. off the line well yes an awd will cook it because the fwd has tire spin which is helped by some meatier tires,  The car has to work less though just turning the front tires and there is less weight to the car so yess after the line it is faster but by then does it really matter? if in short street race no if long distance race sure so it is all in what you want. Me I am happy with my 3000 with the fwd ( mainly because I did it myself)
