Im currently interested in purchasing my friends 1992 3000gt sl. 99% of the car is in perfect mechanical condition, except for the engine, which he suspects has a broken rod bearing or valve lift. I'm just wondering how expensive/frustrating this is to fix, or if it is cheaper/more reasonable to buy a whole new engine. Thx ahead of time for ur help.

if you buy it and pull the motor, it would be the perfect time to throw in a vr4 turbo motor.  it won't cost too much more than the non-turbo, and you will get a healthy increase in horsepower.  (222hp vs. 320hp)  I'm waiting for my motor to die so I can attempt it.

Yes but in order to do that you need to know a fair amount about the specifics of what your doing. Even I wouldnt know everything to the letter. So i advise against that.

Not to mention sinse she is asking what is cheapest, i highly doubt she is going to want to go the more expensive route. Just a thought.

rod bearing issues are a definite swap motor time issue. Get a cheap price on the shell, and factor in how much a vr4 swap in going to cost you. If it's still worth it. Go for it

i bought a 1991 like amonth ago with the same problem, i just got a new motor. It would cost more money for them to take it out and strip what you got.
