Check Engine Light

My check engine light turned on a few days ago and it won't turn off. I've checked all the fluids, and the car sounds fine. What could keep the light from turning off?

go to autozone and get the code check then come back and let us know what it says.

What year is the car? I have a 93 and went to autozone and they couldn't troubleshoot the light cause they didn't have the scanner LOL. Did it myself with an Ohm meter. But mostly what sets the light off is a problem in a sensor somewhere that is out of specs. If the sensor fails the ECU will go into an Open mode and allows the car to run. You will not get the best preformance till the sensor is fixed.

01 Eclipse GT, I'll probably just take it somewhere and see if they can diagnose it. It would be nice if I could do it with ignition though!

autozone, advance, etc. will most likely do it for free. if you take it somewhere to get it diagnosed, then they will charge you.

yeah, I was told in one of the other threads about the key dance trick. I tried it yesterday in my 97 RS and it didn't work... Maybe I'm doing something wrong. Can someone explain this trick further or point me in the right direction to read about it? 'Tank ya.

Why would a bad sensor give your car worse performance?

Example, your O2 is out of voltage specs and can not tell the ECU how much O2 is passing thru your exhaust. So the ECU takes the safe approach and richens the mixture goint into the Cylinder to make sure the engine doesn't get a lean condition (BAD). More fuel is use so you lose preformance in the car though, you might not tell if you are only driving around town. Your gas milage would go down though. 01's can be checked at Autozone though and I would start with them. At least it would give you a starting point to troubleshoot. GL with it

Took it to Autozone but they didn't have the correct harness to plug into the car, so I took it to Advanced Auto and encountered the same situation. So I took it to the local garage, they CAN do it but will charge me $20. Why can't I get it done for free when everyone else can?

your autozone sucks.

agreed, i don't see how they wouldn't have the right one if you have a 3g.

There is another Auto Zone about 20 minutes from here I can call and check before I go there!

Yea they should've been able to do it. Not sure which OBD is on those 3Gs. MOST of the time the check engine light signifies an electrical problem like a sensor. Call around before you make the trip and tell them you need to get a code scan done for your check engine light. If you do happen to get it done ASK WHAT TEH CODE IS! Many times they will say, "Oh its your oxygen sen..s..o..r...(voice gets so quite you can't hear them)." Hahahah! Yea you want to know EXACTLY WHAT THE SCANNER SAYS! Most of them will have words scroll on the screen and if theirs isn't that advanced get ther code that comes up. Good luck!

it uses OBD2 just like most other modern cars. i think that the autozone guys were just too lazy to go do it. an autoparts store not having an OBD2 scanner.....thats not very likely.

OK, i had it tested and the codes are:
PO172 = ?
PO175 = ?
Can someone do their magic?

Not only will your gas mileage go down but also there isn't enough air in the cylinder to burn ALL the excess fuel cleanly so it starts forming deposites on the plugs. Not only are these carbon deposites gumming up your plugs BUT they are ALSO going into your caty and muffler eventually clogging them as well.
I agree the 3G has the OBD II I can't remember what year they started coming on all the cars I think it was mid-late 90's. They're just a bunch of lazy fools.
As for what the codes mean I can't recall offhand BUT there is either a thread or a post somewhere with the code listings (SOMEONE found them...) I'll look in my Haynes when I get home. (I'm kinda at college right now so I can't exactly check at the moment).

P0172 = system to lean (bank 1)
P0175 = system to rich (bank 2)
I am going to guess that you just need to replace an o2 sensor, not a big deal.

Alrighty, that's what I thought as well. On my old dodge i could dance the key and that's the only problem I had with a Check Engine light (O2 Sensor). Thanx for your help :)

no problem man thats what were here for

All right guess I'm not gonna look it up then LOL... Yep sounds like the O2 though...

Don't O2 sensors usually have there own code though? bank 1 lean and bank 2 rich sounds like a fuel problem or something but I could be wrong I am not to familar with the V6 eclipse. Just wondering
TheEngineer
3/6/2006 11:11:40 PM
well i know that bank 1 and bank 2 are the 02's but i don't know why its lean and rich reading, you could be right but i know that bad 02's are a typical problem with these cars.
Sanguinius

You should take readings on the 2 sensors and see which one is in normal specs. Think about it the ECU is checking both sensors then comparing them. One is coming back way too far off so the comp is throwing the code for both cuz it doesn't really know which one is right.

I'll replace the O2 sensor first and see what happens, could my CAI have anything to do with the fuel?
Sanguinius
3/7/2006 12:48:55 AM
Not really... Unless you don't have the MAS installed right... Then the ECU won't be seeing the air coming in right...
