I haven't seen anything on the forum about chipping a car. Sorry if I missed it or if this is a dumb question. I have been told a few times by friends to chip my car because it was awesome for them to put a chip in their cars and gain all this horse power. This sounds like a bad idea to me and not a safe one. Please tell me I am right.

like an ebay chip or like an actual chip that you put in the computer.

Well, I guess we hadn't clarified that in our argument. What is the difference and is either good?

If it is what i think your thinking about, they charge like 20 bucks for a .02cent resistor... and you cut a wire on the ECU and splice it in, and it leans out the motor a little, but within a few miles.. .it burns out. Its usless...

Chipping an ECU is different... you put it on a dyno and you take the stock 'chip' and you retune it. That costs a decent amount...

so an ebay chip is not worth it and could be harmful or a waste of money?

I dont think it would be harmful... but 100% a waste of money.

Its just as stupid as those 'turbbonator' things.
