Clarify 1g,2g,3g

Being new to all this, and reading up on so much, can someone clarify this whole 1g,2g,3g breakdown. I am assuming it refers to 1st generation etc but can someone tell me which years are 1g etc. Thanks in advance.

3rd generation eclipse-00-05
4th generation eclipse-06-.....


this works for other cars as well just throwen an example out.
