just bought a 1991 3000 GT non turbo , auto trans. today , the guy I got it from said that it wouldnt fire the front coil pack so he removed it to get it fixed, but lost it , the car still run but still misses ,I did not think it would run without the ecu, does anyone have one for sale ?  what about the part about about the front coil pack not firing could this have been the ecu? went to the autoparts store and they said they needed the cpu number to order one anyone know what the number is? thanks for any help.

No, they will not run without the ECU.
Yes, the ECU can cause one coil pack to not fire...but so can the PTU.
Yes, the car will run on just 4 cylinders.
You'll have to remove the ECU to see what model number it is.
It can be rebuilt for about the same price as one from the autoparts store (that has been rebuilt).

There has to be an ECU in the car.  They will not run without one.  They won't, can't and don't.  Take off the carpet on the drivers side of the console, you'll be able to see the wiring harness leading to the ECU, it is behind the radio.

Unless the previous owner put some diesel fuel in with the gasoline so it would compression fire, the ECU has to be there.  Without the ECU, there is nothing telling the PTU to fire the coils.  No fire = No run.

It does not have the ecu in it ,and it does run, the ecu wires are hanging out of the pass side , three yellow multipin connectors , I know it sounds like bull but it does run without it, but only fires 4 plugs.

The wires won't hang out the passenger side of the console area, they aren't long enough.  Pull the covers, see for yourself.  The TCU (transmission) computer may be missing, and the car will run without the TCU.  That is probably what the wires went to.  Both the TCU and ECU are in the same general area.

I'm pretty much done with this thread until you pull the carpets on the console and prove to yourself that the ECU is in fact still there.

Good luck.

Hahahaha running without the ECU??!!! HAHAHA that has to be the greatest thing I've heard in awhile. Hahaha. Look my 1st Gen TT ECU fragged itself and I pulled it out of the car and guess what? the car won't run hahahaha. Man that made my day

There are several computers in the car.  For slushboxes, there is the TCU, center console, near the firewall.    The ECS in in the rear hatch, passenger side.  ABS near a rear speaker, passenger side I think.  ETACS is under the dash, near your left knee.  SRS is under the console storage compartment.  Auto climate control unit is above the radio.  The ECU is in the center stack behind the radio.

Trust me when I say the car will not run without its brain...

T.hanks for the imfo, I will look in to it , the old owner is the one that pulled the computer and lost it, you all are more then likly righr because it does run . It would be nice if this is the case as It is really hard to find the ecu almost impossible. Hopefully I can find the other computer for sale.  Thanks again

Check out AVPRO or ECMTOGO.com, they can likely repair your ECU, if that is the problem.  They may also be able to sell you a TCU, since that is what you are missing.  The original owner may have thought he was removing the ECU, since they are close together.
