Daylight Running Lights (DRL) are in my humble opinion THE most annoying "feature" of this car. It serves no purpose other than making sure the headlights burn out as quickly as possible. My previous car did not have the feature and last 2 years LONGER w/o DRL than my Mom's which had the feature.

I have tried taking off the fuse, but it didn't work.

Does anyone know of any way to DISABLE this annoying "feature"???

My Mitsu dealer said they cannot do it, but you guys know how to work around the system. When I had a my little '92 Miata, we did things to it the dealers said we couldn't do. :) All Thanks for forum people like you and me. ;)

Can anyone help?

Thanks! Gracias! Merci! Obrigado! :)

DRL's have been mandated in Canada for at least a decade now and I for one had no problem when they were introduced.  In fact I can't count the number of times the DRL's have saved a potential head-on collision, particularly at dusk.  I find it more disconcerting now when I see cars without DRL's, i.e. exempt older models, US visitors, etc., but I guess I am just used to them....

Wow, that is interesting. I did not know that Canada was mandated DRL. Here in the US of A, they are not required and honestly, we don't get as many cloudy days/overcast days as Canada does. So the DRL are more of an irritation (and waste of a bulb, which in the Outlander case costs something like $80 a piece).   I live in the "Sunshine State" and I am moving to a state where they get 300 sunny days per year, so frankly finding a way to eliminate the DRL would be awesome.   Anyone has any ideas to de-activate this deplorable feature?   Thanks! :)

Either take out the bulbs or deal with it..............

Is it the headlights or the fog lights, I thought it was just Saab and Volvo that had DRL because of the laws in their country of origin and couldn't be assed to disable it for overseas sales!

It's the fogs for the Outlander owners that have HID's...................

I just figured it out.... I love not having DRL's. My outlander is a 06, not sure if it would be done the same way on the 07.  But all you have to do is remove the front ecu which is the red box inside the fuse cover lid under the hood.  Once you pull that box out bend the second clip from the top to the side (opposite of the side with writing and part #) and there you go! no more drl's

DRL's saved me quite a bit on insurance, so I'm happy I have them.

DRLs are one of the most useful features introduced on todays cars.
regardless of what you believe, they work to decrease accidents.  Leave them alone.

Brews,

I agree with you, but can't they find a way to SHUT THEM OFF WHILE I'M PARKED?

It's so damn annoying having them stay on while i'm in park and not moving.  And why don't they stay on when I turn on my HID's?  The one time I want them on, and they shut off.  Stupid design by MMNA.

I highly doubt the DRL would even be visible over the more powerful HID lights.

Because the DRL's are actually the foglights in the XLS, it creates a problem.  The foglights shut off when the HID's are on.  Once again, it's a dumb design by MMNA.  Now I don't have the option of having foglights.

the foglights dont "shut off" when the HIDs are on;  they cars with HID's dont have foglights at all.

Brews,

What would MMNA do if I purchased the "foglight" option for my XLS?  Would I have to pay $300 for a switch that allows me to bypass the "foglights" aka DRL's or would MMNA install extra foglights on the roof of my truck, since my OEM foglights are being used as DRL's?

Instead of using foglights as DRL's, they should've just put an extra 9004 bulb in the headlight housing  (in addition to the HID capsule) and used that as a DRL.  Instead they chose to use the location utilized by optional "foglights" as DRL's.

And that's not the annoying part.  What's annoying is that THEY DON'T TURN OFF WHEN YOU ARE PARKED!!!

DRL on my LS only turn on when I am parked if I:   1. Put the transmission on reverse and then back to park.   2. Put the parking brake down (I kid you not).   Once the DRL are on, the only way to shut them off it turning off the car.   It is annoying as Blackb13 says. I park in front of a friend's house (driveway) and people come out to see what is going on, why is there are a car with headlights on my front door. All it is is putting cologne on or waiting for someone to get their make-up done.   I get no insurance discount for DRL and I have no fog lights, so I am thinking my bulb will bust sooner than it normally should for no reason. I also live in a very sunny area, so no one can see the DRL. No wonder I am ticked about it.  Plus FL is #4 most expensive car insurance state in the US... you get discounts for nothing.   I tried taking out the fuse (fuse #13 on the engine compartiment), but didn't work.  At least I tried.

Just get them re-wired....I'm looking into geting HIDs in the fogs like on my '03. If I have better vision at night with bright lights them I'm happy.

cant be done.. at least not that easily.   Its all hardwired into the CAN BUS.  its more software than hardware.

they shut off because between the HIDs and the DRLs (or foglights, whatever you wanna call them) they actually exceed the maximum level of lumens allowed by cars.

also, there are many, many companies that dont shut them off when parked.  Is it really that big a deal to have 2 lights on?

DRL is mandatory many places in Europe too.

I really don't see why DRLs would be such a pain for people.....

I agree. Study shows that it is a safety in traffic.

I like them. I have nothing bad to say about them. In my moms malibu, her head lights are on all the time. Shes owned the car for 3 years now she is still on the original bulbs.

Well, I will certainly "bitch" about this to Mitsu. They make one of the car's most important safety features (The ASC) "optional", to which you can turn it off, why not make DRL optional too.   Let's hope the bult lasts at least 3 years. You know, I will be quite pissed if the damn bult busts when I am in a cross-country trip and have to get pulled over by every dickhead cop in every city and county I cross over because a light bulb busted out.

Dood...really? Come on now. DRLs optional?? Wow...and do you really think that a cop will pull you over and give you a ticket because one of your daytime running lights is out? oh man......
