i was thinking about buying a shifter off ebay for my 98 eclipse. They are really cheap on there and im just wondering if they are good or not. Ive heard that i shouldnt buy stuff off ebay. But at the same time i dont want to spend $100 on a shifter?
thanks

alot of times people will get suckered into a short shifter that is cheap because they figure, how different could it be. Well the real difference is in two places, 1 being the quality of the linkages and the metal and 2 being that usually the cheap ones are only a shorter shift knob rod. While the more expensive ones are true short "throw" shifters that actually reduce the ammount of throw required to shift. This is done by not just changing the length of the knob rod.

It would also help if you gave us a link so we could give you better feedback

link is right above you...
thanks for the input though.
I guess considering im a noob im mostly looking for the shorter rod in general. Just something not as long.thanks

yea i posted like a minute after you so i didnt see the post. The price makes me very weary. Especially when a normal price is in the 80-100 range, although this one doesnt come with a knob

to me i would trust something alittle more made from a known manufacturer like this

thats not bad, it comes with a knob which i dont really need. It just makes me curious cause its like the same exact thing... maybe i can search around and find one without a knob thats a decent brand and a lil cheaper?

Id say, in the car world... you pay for what you get. Im sure if we could get a closer look at the welds at the one Jon showed you and the small things like that youd see a difference, weight and strength of the materials, etc...

Don't go cheap on the car because you might regret it also going with a brand name will save you the headache.

what if i just take out the stock one, cut a chunk out the middle and weld the threads back ontop? Would that be safe no?

That is actually a fairly common mod.

also a really lame mod

i wouldnt do it. You kdont really gain much by shortening the rod. And you ruin it by doing it. If you want to you can and it shoud work fine. Just not something i would suggest. Its your car though

I bought one of those cheep "short" shifters and may end up cutting it down to an exceptable size. The knob end is much longer than I was hopeing for but otherwise it seems ok for now. Just be aware you get what you pay for.

Last Christmas my brother bought me a short shifter for my Lancer on EBAY, and it only cost him about $50.  I had it installed, and it will be almost a year that i've had it in.  I have had no problems with it so far.  I do not personally trust EBAY, but this item happened to work out for me.  As far a cutting it, my friend's brother had a VW and cut the shifter on it to make it a "short shifter" and cut it too short and it looks bad, and he has trouble shifting it because of that.
