I have a eclipse rs and i took it to a machine shop and they repalced 3 valves. They checked all the rest and said they were fine. So we put it back together and it still makes a tapping noise from the top end at the number 1 or 2 cyclinder. We used a stethoscope to determine this. Anyon have any ideas what could be wrong? we left the lash adjustments in the head when we took it in to the shop. Could that be why it is tapping. Do we need to reprime them with oil? Or does it sound like a valve. The engine idles just fine but the tapping moves around. any ideas?

Possibly off time by a tooth? Did they check the valves for mushrooming? Also did you have the valve springs compression and squareness?

Also does it come from the top of the engine (Head area) or from the middle area (block area)?

If its knocking just sitting in the drive way then their is a serious problem.

If it's a "come and go" type of ticking where it dissappears and comes back- it's more than likely your hydraulic lash adjusters (lifters). There really no need to prime them as oil pressure will surely pump through them right away while cranking. Is there any particular reason why you had to replace 3 valves? If they were burnt- perhaps you had a problem with the lash adjusters in the 1st place causing them to burn out??

Or possibly the timing belt went and bent some valves?

it is a tapping noise comming from the top end. I talked to a dealer mechanic and he said that if you dont prime the lash adjusters then it will do this. so we are just going to replace them since im going to have to take the head off. AGAIN. this sucks.

Yes, it WILL do it initially but will quiet down within the 1st few seconds of engine operation under normal conditions. Aside from that, why do you need to take off the head? To replace the lifters, you'll need to remove the timing belt and camshaft only. If for some other reason you actually do need to remove the head- be sure to use the update MLS (Multi Layered Steel gasket available from the dealer (420A engine). Good Luck!!
