So I was just discovering on my wife's new 07 Outlander that the fog lights are only on for DRL's, and you can't turn them on with the HID's?  WTFM8?

Been covered many times.  It would be to bright to be leagal with the HID's and Fog's on at the same time.

I think that's the first I've heard of the too bright reason, but it makes sense because the fogs on most cars will turn off for High Beams (I used to think it was for electrical load reasons..well that and you should only use low beams in fog..but 99% use foglights for show)

Also, the foglamp bulbs on the HID models aren't the same as on the non-HIDs.  They use a less bright 1157 bulb, often used for turn signals.

That's just rediculous.

The Evos have HID's that have fog lights that are able to be ran.

Hell, even the Envoy that my wife drove before the Outlander had fogs you could run with the HID's.

First I have to say, states have different traffic laws. But most states allow a vehicle to have a total of 4 lights on at a time. So this could be 2 low and 2 fog, or 2 low and 2 high. This is why vehicles that have fog lights have their fogs turned off when the high beams are activated.

Just look at the vehicles that drive that have HID's. MANY of them have their fogs on at the same time. Having fogs and HID's on is not illegal for being too bright. ??? The brighter the better, thats why they came out with HID's. Fogs are usually a lower watt bulb anyways, that usually points at the ground lighting up the first 10 feet. Fogs are not suppose to affect other drivers.

We (someone) needs to find out how to overide the DRL's so that they stay on all the time, with HID's on or off.

Edit: Oh yeah, PLUS some non-US versions DO have HID's that have the fog feature and not the DRL. Meaning their HID's and fogs are on at the same time.

^^ I agree 100%

What would it take to try it out? I don't really have any experience messing with the wiring and such, but SOMEONE has to have the knowledge to figure this one out. Like 50% of the members of this sub-forum would be super excited!

I'd be more than willing to take a stab at it, considering I'm an aircraft electrician in the Air Force, but after dealing with my local Mitsu dealer with my Evo...I'm not about to do anything to my wife's car that the dealership could point fingers at and void warranty work.

Out of curiosity, do you guys want both on just for esthetic's or functionality?  When I typically want my fog light to be on when it's snowing, we don't get much fog around here, I also want my headlight to be as low as possible, otherwise the only thing I see are snowflakes coming at me.

I'd say both.

If I'm going to have fog lights, I want to be able to use them when I want to.  If not, why do we have fog lights?

Definitely both. I think the more light the better, and I think it would look good with the HIDs.

Fog lights are for seeing 30-50 feet in front of you when you are driving 20MPH, HIDs are for seeing 300 feet in front of you when your dring 70+ MPH.

More light in fog is definatly not better.

But I do agree with the look, it's just not function.

Fog lights do help.... a little :). Probably 90% of OEM fog lights are for aesthetic purposes only... some may argue and say not, but most STOCK fog lights dont provide enough of a difference in visibility to make me change my mind. I know that there are some vehicles that have oem fogs that help greatly though.

The main problem with fog is that standard headlamps cause glare, which makes it hard to see through fog. Light that cuts through fog/snow needs to be either yellow (3000k) or of low wattage. Both reduce glare, which helps see through the fog. Also, fog lamps need to have a sharp cut off line so that light does not go reflecting everywhere. And need to be low to the ground to try and light up as much of the road and less of the fog. This is why you see projector lens used for fog lamps (have a sharp cut off line and the light can be more concentrated. So if a vehicle does not have what I just explained, your pretty much pissing in the wind :)  or fog...

Which is why I say that most oem applications are for aesthetic purposes. I do like the look of fog lights, and only wish I could keep mine (drl's) on all the time :(

Our escape hybrid has oem fog lights and they help a lot, not for seeing further, but for seeing closer. They allow you to see a lot more directly in front of you and makes the light a little bit brighter. I use them sometimes just on a dark road (I drive in PA where the roads can be twisty and very dark). I don't care all that much about not being able to use the fogs on the outie, as the HID's are pretty good, I hate more the fact that the DRL's are always on. I often get to places early, and sit for a minute or two before leaving the car. And with the DRL's, people always think I am leaving, so I often have to turn off the car, and turn it back on with the parking brake on to turn them off (that works for people who don't know). But yes, it would be nice to be able to choose when to have them on, but oh well, we don't!

I don't have HIDs on my Outlander, and I find that the fog lights that I have work very well, much better than the OEM fog lights I had on my Mazda.
I totally agree with the esthetic's, I very often turn on the fog lights just for the look.  People can be unhappy about how MMC has designed the system, but it certainly does not impact function.

Are there any HID projectors that will fit as fog lights? that would be sweet and simple way to bypass the whole DRL thing, just do a straight to batter configuration and add a switch, that way you dont even need to turn on your head lights if you just want fog ligts.
