what do you mean a hardtop spyder. Like the benz that has a folding hard top. Im failing to see the point of this?

i actually thought about this way back when before i knew anything about eclipses and cost of customizing.    it would be cool IMO BUT the cost of it would not justify the benefit.   it will be heavier, hella expensive for the custom work, extra paint, you'll have lines in your roof....   true it would be cool just for uniqueness but i probably wouldn't do it....   this is kinda like the project of putting a targa top in a hardtop coupe... the cost doesn't justify w/ the custom work, roll cage, extra suspension, and extra body suport...  but i'm not shooting you down by any means :) i thought like this once also. lol

I've wondered that too!! I know exactly what you're talking about too I think.. not like a HARD TOP (expensive, heavy, etc) but like the ones they make for say the S2000s?? I've wondered that too it'd be a lot of custom work sure but I'm sure someone would love to get their hands on something like that (for the money i'm sure) but more people like us that are interested in such things!
Is this what you were talking about?? Just snaps on?

that actually could be a money making idea right there...it reduces the weight of your spyder dsm...

if he is thinking what i was thinking way back when.   he's talking about a motorized hard top like the Mercedes coupes.      making it more expensive and a $hitload of custom fabricating.

I dont see it reducing weight. At all. You would STILL need the motor to pull it down, but youve now added the weight of the metal roof instead of the cloth.

if you read my post in the beginning... it will ADD weight.     HARD top = heavier.   heaver = larger motor needed to retract it.    larger motor = heavier.

um i was talking about a lightweight carbonfiber smap on cover like the s2000's have...thus LESS weight

Ah yes, my mistake. Was never aware the S2000 used a CF roof. Sorry

they didnt stock..but there are quite a few companys that make the aftermarket application hard tops that snap on for weight reduction

gotcha.  well in that case yes... it will reduce quite a bit of weight, the thing that makes the Spyder's sooo heavy in the first place is the fact that it has that big motor that retracts the top down and up so by removing that and the heavy fabric and metal top you will cut quite a bit of weight.   i don't think it would be toooo terribly hard for a company to make a mold of something like that but hey... i'm not CF Fabricator lol
