I have had a preliminary shuftie : I might try knocking together a new firmware image if I can find someone (brave|stupid|willing) enough to install it .. :)

For the 261EM version (Outlander 07) I can also test an image. I don't think there is something to screw as long as I use another disk. So, count on me :)

Heh..
I _believe_ it should be ok... I'll see if there is a fairly low level way of backing up an existing working system before we try screwing around with it .. :)

Well I took the plunge and started screwing around with it :)

Here's my results.

I downloaded the modified image you created for the dvd-in-motion hack and pulled the hard drive from the MMCS and updated the loading.kwi file with yours and put the drive back in.

When I turned the ignition key on, the MMCS booted as usual.  Turns out you have to disconnect power from the MMCS for a few minutes to get it to do a "Cold" boot.  I assume a cold boot is the only time the bootloader code is invoked.

Anyway, the bootloader came up with the message "Program version-up in progress." with a progress bar that filled up within about a second.  Once the progress bar filled up, the screen went blank and nothing would happen.  Sigh :(  Each time I turned the ignition key off and on, it'd just do the same thing.

Since I figured this modified firmware wasn't going to work, I decided to do some experimenting with the bootloader.
I removed the hard drive from the unit and turned the key back on.  I got a message "Insert a program disk."

I already had a CD burned with the mitsubishi's original "loading.kwi" file on it, so I stuck it in the drive and got a message "Now checking the disk."  After a few moments, it came back with this message "Program writing error.  Turn the engine key off to retry."  Oh well.

After that, I put the original loading.kwi back onto the hard drive, it did the 'program update' just as it had been before, then immediately after got a message "Checking screen data.", then shortly after a message "Screen data check has been completed.  Restarting"

And all was back to normal.

Sounds to me like we are _extremely_ close to being able to modify the OS on this thing!  Stay tuned!

I already ghosted the hdd. That was the very first operation after I unlocked it. And then I used another cloning tool just to be sure (or paranoic).
So I can try loading the new OS ...

Hrmm..
ICBW, but the bootloader refers to a disk-on-chip device.. Can you confirm that the OS is loaded from the hard-drive as opposed to that ? If so, that makes things easier ..
If anyone has hi-res pictures of the circuit boards in the nav unit, I'd appreciate copies.

What kind of disk-on-chip device?  Like flash memory?  Or maybe just RAM?  I could only get the bootloader to look for a new OS by cold-booting the system.  It appears that during a cold boot, it'll look for the OS wherever it can find it (CDROM drive, hard drive), or give an error message "Insert program disk" if it can't find it.

I suppose if the OS is stored in RAM, losing power would wipe the contents so it has to load it again from disk.  Hopefully myself or someone else will take some pics of the circuit boards so we can get more info.

In the mean time, I'm willing to keep experimenting with different loading.kwi files until we figure out how to get it to take!

Hey dude ..
Hmm - Like M-Systems Disk-On-Chip.. ( now sandisk owned ).
Flash device which, with the appropriate drivers, can be treated like a hard drive..

The work you guys have done so far is amazing.  brian360, otaku, GPSeek, oly_57mpg !!

We can only ask for one more thing. Just a A-Z on how to put in a bigger HDD for more storage of mp3's etc.  please

Am I correct in thinking ....basically for a bigger HDD you need to unlock, remove, image drive, restore image onto bigger HDD, re install in unit? But do you have to make a partition bigger etc?

Please just an A-Z on upgrading to a bigger HDD ....thanks guys! You rock

cheers

Hello

How to restore the system when HDD has broken

If you have a HDD hardware failure, you have to go to Mitsubishi to get a new one.
If the disk is OK but the data is messed up. you can copy the files back from an older image.
Now, is very important to know what software version you had.

There are no partitions or folders on my hdd any more. At least bios recognizes hdd. It is possible that the software version is BLD-NR-261EM 1.09.
I dont have any images, can you advise me where I could download them.

You must unlock the drive by following the instructions in the 1st post of this thread.  Until you unlock the drive, you won't see any partitions or files.  Each time you put the drive back in the MMCS the drive becomes locked again.  Is the MMCS giving you any error messages?

Thank you, all is fixed. It didn't occur to me that HDD becomes locked when installed back.
All I wanted was to have a different backround picture when activating, but then it didn't boot up any more.

Does anybody know how to get TomTom navigation system working in MMCS?. Is it even possible?

Last night I got the patch that works for my Evo X, but could not get any of the patches to work for my wifes ''07 Outlander.  Will someone point me in the right direction to the patch (and directions) to the patch that will allow moving DVD''s to be played on an ''07 Outlander??

Thank you , in advance!!!

Hmm..
The Denso system is completely different to the mitsu one : the only similarities are in the "real" data files : loading.kwi is not a standard format, and differs between the two units.

And thanks for the linkback to my site .. :)

For those of you who have to take out your HDD in the future, I had a tough time finding an adapter for an automotive grade 2.5" HDD to a standard 3.5" IDE connector, so here is what I successfully used:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812203012

Hopefully that will save you some time. Careful though, it''''s flimsy and will break if you are too hard on it (which cost me time and $).

FOR OTAKU AND OTHERS:

I live in GREECE nad the Navigation maps dated from 2006 DON''T EVEN HAVE THE GREEK ISLANDS.....and they are not detailed as other  pda based applications

NOW MY QUESTION
NAVTEQ MAKES MITSU NAVI MAPS & THERE IS A HACK TO CHANGE THE HD OF OUTLANDER NAVI SYSTEM:
CAN WE UPDATE  ONLY THE INTERNAL NAVIGATION MAPS WITH MAPS FROM NAVTEQ FROM OTHER APPLICATIONS ??????????
NAVTEQ PROVIDES MAPS TO DESTINATOR & OTHERS. MOST OF THEM ARE VERY DETAILED ESPECIALLY FOR GREECE ALTHOUGH THEY DON''T INCLUDE MANY OTHER COUNTRIES (that''s not a problem...) THEY SHOULD BE IN THE SAME FORMAT

Agreed.  I''m at the verge of buying the CD from eBay to enable in-motion DVD (although I know all those guys are just downloading a hacked patch, burning to CD, and making money from someone else''s work).

I''ve got close to 500 CDs... I don''t want to rip ALL of them but would love more than the 1700 songs the factory allows me to take along with me.

I''d love to see how to''s (detailed photos would be nice also) of how to:

  • Replace HDD with a larger drive
  • Transfer .mp3s directly from PC instead of just re-ripping CDs
  • Enable in-motion DVD
  • Change background, theme, start-up screens, etc.

Anyone?  Heh... anyone in Cleveland, OH want to make some money taking care of the above on a 2009 Lancer GTS?

I have a 120gb in mine Ill be posting a thread by the end of the week with full directions on how to do it. NOTE THE DIRECTIONS ARE UNIX / LINUX BASED. You need a real computer to do it ;p

I like it! :)  The irony being that the MMCS runs Windows CE.

I don''t see any reason a emulator for Unix wouldn''t work as long as you have access to all the standard drive tools that unix has.

azchipka, enormous advances that you have obtained with the MMCS, and I hope you can share this with all we to improve the characteristics of these units, good work
