yeah ive heard they are reliable. another reason i want to get one is because my mom is about to buy this mg kit car and they have a vw engine in it.

the 1.8t's are known to catch on fire lol, specially if they're modded. if you want something thats reliable, go with a 2.0, if you want stock performance, as in you dont want to mod it too much, id get a vr6. they're torquey little guys.

yeah i have been looking at the engines and such and it seems like almost any engine will go in any of them. plus if you want to im pretty sure the golf front ends bolt right up.

i want a vr6 if any of them.

i wouldnt go so far as to say they are reliable, maybe a bit moreso then dsm's, but ive seen more vw's breaking down around me then dsm's are. my friends vr6 just spun a bearing, he got the motor replaced, then not even a week later he broke his halfshaft

is he running aftermarket stuff? cause from my expierences vdubs are very reliable stock cars...

Yeah, don't expect to be able to tune it like a dsm.

I know someone who's had a turbo VW for a whil enow and hasn't any problems with it. He has a few mods on it, not sure as to how deep he went with messing with the engine but I haven't heard any complaints or problems from him.

the only jetta's ive heard of being reliable are the 2.0's, and they are slow lol, dont expect too much performance from them unless you are gonna go drastic (as in boosting it) and then it will most likely loose its reliability

Yeah I don't know who got the idea that they are reliable. I had a friend with a 95 2.0 and his broke down almost every 3 months. One time he was having electrical issues and smoke came out of the instrument cluster. The turbos and V6's are especially unreliable. They are one of the most unreliable cars of all time. Just look at consumer report

http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/cars/used-cars/cr-recommended/the-best-worst-used-cars-406/overview/index.htm?resultPageIndex=1&resultIndex=6&searchTerm=least%20reliable%20cars%201998

If you look at other reports too it is almost always on the most unreliable list. Combined with really expensive parts, I would not reccomend it.

Haha didn't think they'd be that bad - Stay away from mods then if your going to go with it, just increases the risk/chance

a 2.slow is a mad reliable car, VR6s are the faster ones

well i think if i get one it will be the vr6 and it will be awhile from now but its just a thought.

are any of the jetta engines as fast as the 420a at least?

the VR6 is MAD fats, you kidding? those have a massive amount of potential, theyre a pretty popular car to modify

whats your definition of 'fast'? yes, the 2.0's are probably a little faster because they are lighter then the eclipse. if the 420a defines your standard of fast, you got some issues to sort out

no no no i dont think the 420a is fast. if a jetta is slower than this then there is no way i am getting one haha. im never getting a car slower than this haha.

This is my first car so i havent even expierenced fast yet and i want to and i know i prolly wont if i get a jetta but i like them.  Plus i see alot more jettas and golfs around than dsms, so they would be easier to get ahold of.

but dont think im getting rid of my dsm cuz im in love even if it is just a 420a haha
