I've been trying to figure out the differance between the adapter kits you can get on ebay for like 35 or 40 bucks that have a K&N cone filter and an adapter piece to replace the airbox and the FIPK kit straight from K&N. From what I can tell it's just that the KN adapter piece is metal and the filter is an oval as opposed to just the basic round cone but their kit, even on ebay, is around 100. Can anyone shed some light on this or confirm what I am saying that there is no real differance?

The kits on ebay use a less quality adaptor. It is made from CNC material, but the edges (were the air enters) are NOT rounded or smooth. The FIPK is both rounded and smooth for air transition.
I am using an FIPK for a 3000GT. It works great and comes with the filter cleaning kit. Most of those OFFbrand filters are junk and need to be replaced often. Not with the K&N kit.
It is up to you. The difference is in the frequent changes and filter quality vrs. maybe 2-3hp difference between the 2 because of quality and airflow. I just went with the K&N for the filter cleaning kit, lol.

Well the ones for like 40 do have a K&N brand filter with them. For half the price I think I might go with one of those and just use my dremel to smooth out the adapter if it's go burrs or something.

Sounds good. The plates are VERY thin, here is an example of the plate for the FIPK.
If you flip it over you will see the rolled edges to get the air to flow correctly.
The plates on ebay are MAYBE 1/4 to 1/6 of an inch thick.
Again, up to you. You can't really go wrong with either.
