Powershifting...... good?

All right so, a friend of mine is REALLLY a fan of this guy who drives an Integra (no ricer, ALL stock, forged interns, just a small reflective club decal on a window) and he of course being in that state lent the RS' wheel to him, about 10 minutes back he cams telling me how he could pull out extra speed on it blha blah, so he goes ahead and tries it on his own, he comes back and the clutch grinds on 2nd and 3rd gear... putting aside the facts that these are an integra and an RS (this means ignore :P) i wonder 2 things...
What the hell happend to his tranny? did he ****ed it up or does it just need an adjustment?
Is powershifting really that good? is it not hurtful at all to the car if done correctly? cuz to me it sounds D.U.M.B somehow

I don't think it is good, quite the opposite really. Sure it will shave a fraction of time off a timeslip, all too often people end up with a notchy, jacked up tranny...just like your friend.

Congrats... the tranny is fuuuukt lol
I have seen videos of honda boys doing this... never ends pretty.
You want a chellenge? Try flat shifting. Thats without using the clutch.

Actually thats what im referring to haha, i thought the name of forcing the gears was powershifting, and i quite could do it on the gti when i had it, it had a strong tranny and of course i did it at small speed and releasing the gas for every shift...

Powershifting is without lifting the gas.... flat shifting is without depressing the clutch

both sound equally destructive if you don't nail it.

Yeah but to nail it seems to be the prob... i remember the rabbit wouldnt let you shift without the clutch if it wasnt at like 3.8k, i dunno how they do it @ high revs or near red line, destructive indeed.... for now i wanna know what the heck happened to the clutch, i crack up everytime i hear the grind on each shift hahaha

Well that would be his syncros totally gone.

Sorry Sebba ill n00b on you this time, i have NO idea what the syncros on a tranny are, tranny is not my area of expertise, some kind of thingy thaat keeps from grinding them gears on 2nd and 3rd?

You kidding?
Syncros stop the gear from moving so when its engaged it does not grind. When they are toast... you get grinding and you have to shift oldschool. Rev match.

Usually when i hear powershifting i think of having it at WOT and pulling on the gear and as soon as you touch the clutch it pops in.

Thats pretty much what i said. Keeping your foot on the gas and mashing the clutch.

flat shifting??? i can take my car in and out of gear without pressing the clutch.. is this it, i mean there is no grinding, it just slides in, and my foot is off the gas

Try doing it at redline... when your in like third or something... at redline... take it out of third and put it into 4th without removing your foot off the gas.. and without touching the clutch.. that takes skillz

when racing i have always powershifted, i didn't think it would be that big of a deal. as for flat shifting i wsa just drivin around one day and found out that i could in my Eclipse a while back. but i never thought it was good for the car so i never did it on a regular basis.

what does it do....give you less decelersating time and more accelerating time with extra boost? i drive an auto never a manual so im a noob at this....

well you can't do it in an auto. but in a stick basically powershifting is basicaly when you change gears at a high rpm w/o taking ur foot off the accelerator, that way when you release the clutch you are still at full throttle and pulling just as hard.

ah i see so no losing speed...got it
Kaede.Noir
5/31/2007 12:38:20 PM
yeah thats pretty much the reaction, you dont have a slight loss of speed when you do the shifting, its not that much of a deal but with each shift the car seems to give a lil hop? something like that, but like sebba says, if you dont have the skills ill haunt your dreams laughing at your broken tranny

I'm sure your dad will appreciate you frying his syncro's on his Jeep...hell, he'll probably even give you a raise in your allowance... *rollseyes*

im scared to do it at moderate speed....its a 4 cylynder and it makes all sorts of strange noises....for some reason my dad is biased to jeeps...he has a liberty too
