Recently I got a used '93 Eclipse. Everything seems to be alright except for the oil. It's leaking like crazy, but the problem's been narrowed down to the rear main seal. Can anyone tell me about how much that would cost at a shop to repair? Thanks if you can help

I have a '94 1.8 Eclipse... Had the clutch replaced last year and asked the mechanic to do the rear main also. I think he charged around $30 extra (have to check my receipts)...

I'm no expert but it may be more expensive if the rear main is the only thing you're going after. I was told that you might as well have the rear main replaced when the clutch needs replacement (two birds with one stone).

My advice: Look in the phonebook and find a good mechanic that specializes in Japanese cars. Should be able to give you an estimate.

Don't know if this helps:P

You can do it yourself if you have just some regular hand tools, jack, and jackstands. I did it on my 94 eclipse 1.8 auto about a month ago. You could easily do it within a weekend or even a day if you work on it constantly. It took me two days to do it, but hours-wise it was only about 4 hours total work. I spent most of that time away from actually working on it trying to find something with a big enough diameter to knock the rear seal in straight. I found a 3" piece of pvc pipe cap that fit it just perfect inside and outside diameter. It was big enough to fit over the end of the crank and small enough to fit the outside diameter of the seal itself. Go ahead and try it yourself, there's nothing really hard about it.
