When I was driving this morning, the check engine light was suddenly turned on. What would be the major problems for that? Should I take it to a mechanic? OR is there anything I can do before I take it to the mechanic? Thanks. Joy

Did you just fill up the tank? is it running rough? any symptoms? if you take it to AZ or Advance auto or any parts store really, and they hook the scanner up and it says "evap emission control" or somthing to that nature, you need to fix your gas cap...good luck!

i'd say to get the code scanned and post it here. we might be able to help you a little better.

FYI, there are about 200 different codes that could be causing the SES light to come on.

i dont know if this is true, but i've heard that 70% of the time a check engine light has something to do with fuel emissions, i.e. a broken oxygen sensor. like everyone else was saying, discount auto parts can hook any car 1996 or newer up to a sensor for free.

Thanks all. I found that the gas cap was opend. I tightened it up. I can still see the check engine light. This makes me crazy. What else should I do? I'll wait till tomorrow to see if the light is turned off automatically. J

I always suspected Satan's middle name was Mitsubishi.... Now it is confirmed LOL. Yeah it'll take a couple hours of driving time before the light goes out. I did the same thing with my Sentra got an evap code then got gas again and drove for like 4 hours before it finally went out.

You've also gotta watch out. Some cars will actually not take well to a universal O2 sensor. I can't remember which cars don't I know some of the imoprts (I thinkk the european ones are famous for it) won't run right with a universal O2.
