works for me. I like having my design in place before I start a project. I would have built the entire thing out of cardboard before I cut my first piece of wood. You should make up some templates and mass produce these for a little side cash.
On with the glassing!

i was actually thinking about that, my friend suggested that last night haha... like i said, this was the first time i did anything like this, so it was kind of just a wing it sort of project, im actually headin out right now to fiberglass it

good deal, everythings all finally fiberglassed (subbox, amprack, and the crack in my bumper's all done too... i'd take pictures but there'd really be no point, it would look just like the pics before, only wet haha, i'll get stuff tomorrow as im sanding and bondoing

Glad to hear everything went smoothly. Im curious to see how you got arround certain things. I guess i will see tomorrow : )

you were supposed to be taking pics through the whole glassing process!

all it is it 1)take the subs outta the box, set it on top of a table or i used two saw horses, mix up a bunch of fiberglass resin (you don't actually use fiberglass hair/matting, unless there is a fold or rip in the cloth), then use a very cheap paintbrush and spread the resin over the entire frame/fleece. Let it dry overnight, then i'll show ya what to do tomorrow...
Seb, what are your questions?

9/18/2007 11:02:46 PM
ok, that I didn't expect! so you just did like a gelcoating over the fleece, huh? and I expect once it drys you'll sand it smooth? painting it too?

yea i just used the resin (not on my bumper, that i did use the fiberhairs on). after it dries i'll DA (bodyshop sanding tool), get any odd lumps out of it, then cover it in a layer of bondo, sand that smooth, then i believe i'm gettin it covered in black leather to match the new seats... i dont feel like doin that much more work to paint it when i'm selling it, besides getting it wrapped will look better. I'm pretty sure i'm doing the same with the amp rack, just not sure yet

black leather...that gives me an idea for my sub box...then i dont have to worry abt scrathces

yea exactly... i mean, getting it straight enough to paint isnt a problem for me, it's just time consuming, and i dont feel like doing it for a car that i'm about to sell. But my rear seat is getting re-upholstered right now to match to two new front seats, so having the leather back there would just compliment it all that much more

haha you'll get pics tonight, i fiberglassed them all late last night, so it wont be completely dry enough to sand and put bondo on until tonight, then i'll get you're pics haha

yay! I've always said I was going to do this myself but someone that used to do it professionally (but was "too tired" to help me) told me i'd burn myself.. so i've been a big ol pansy. Was the painting the fiberglass resin on very difficult?? burn yourself any? lol.
p.s. i'm sad you're passing on your car i like it!!

im trading it for a gsx... and i'm sure you'll like that one much more haha... but no the brushing the resin on was easy, just use a cheap throw away brush you can get from sears for like a $1, mix it up in a big cup, and just spread it on... what do you mean by burning myself??
SCmitsuchic
9/19/2007 1:18:38 PM
lol. well i heard that the resin gest really hot and pops and stuff and that you can burn the crap out of yourself.. not sure if that's the case but that's what i was told. And why I have yet to try it.. that and now I have no trunk it'd probly be pointless unless I did the back seat.. I have 2 twelves in a sub box shoved in my trunk now and it is TIGHT! I can't even fit a 20disk cd holder in there. it sucks lol.

I'm sure there is an exothermic reaction when you mix the resin...but I highly doubt it would be hot enough to burn you. But there could be a chemical reaction when it comes in contact with tissue that would feel like a burn.

yea, its kinda like bondo or duraglass... it'll get warm as it's hardening, but when you mix it it definitely doesnt pop or even get hot enough to burn you... ya know, i could always make ya a box that would kinda be a rear seat delete

haha, that'd actually be sweet

i think when you finish sanding, you should make a mold. that way, you could mass produce these things much easier if you ever had any interest in making more.

Need a vacume former for that
AlZuben
9/19/2007 3:30:54 PM
no you don't...and those are easy enough to build anyways.
SCmitsuchic
9/19/2007 3:50:10 PM
haha how much would you charge for that!? I've thought about doing it we should colaborate on this lol.I'm just poor.. I work 2 jobs and go to school full time and somehow i'm ALWAYS broke.. I get money and spend it on my car lol. It's kinda sad.

9/19/2007 6:31:48 PM
haha, i guess i could make a mold, couldnt you just lay some plastic over this box, fiberglass it, then pop it off?
AlZuben

buy some latex at an art supply store, give it about a 1 inch coat and then make a two piece plaster mold around that.
then you can just hand lay fiberglass inside the mold.
if you want to do vacuum bagging, you can use the compressor off and old refrigerator.
