Trans swap?

I have heard this time and again: If I want a faster car, I need a manual trans. I have a 2.4L Eclipse RS (AEM Cold air intake + Exaust tip / Muffler (makes a mean rumble). The car sounds mean, but it sure as hell isn't. Now:
-1st up: I know purchasing parts for an automatic trans is more or less worthless- it won't get me too far.
-2nd: The car does not handle well enough to drive it at faster speeds, for racing.
-3rd: The car sounds mean, and is smoked just about every time.

So, this is what I have been considering, in order from what I need most to what I should get last:
    (1, a job again)
    1. Manual Transmission to fit 2001 2.4L Eclipse RS
    2. Coilover Suspension kit, to tighten suspension and enhance handling for higher speeds
    3. Rear disk brakes (yeah I know, I have drums back there.)
    4. Engine Swap, keep the trans?

Help? Please just don't post and tell me, "Hey you need headers and exhaust system," I am not asking for advice on what to buy, but advice on my plan for the car. Thanks.

honestly if your looking for speed, a 3rd gen isnt the car you want. you might want to consider looking into buying a 1st or 2nd gen gst or gsx.

i wouldn't swap the trans. what i would do an evo head swap get an evo header with the stock turbo
(emonz57), as far as rear drums don't know. coilovers tein would be  my Preference. maybe get a high stall torque convertor.

The auto tranny in the 3G is a power stealing whore.  It deff slows the 3Gs down more than it should esspecially the sportys.

but yes a Evo MANIFOLD turbo ect and Evo head will make alot of power
