I need to do some more investigating now that I have heard your sound clips. How pronounced is the sound from inside the cabin with all your windows up?
You can hear it even with the windows up if you are near a wall or in a garage, drive thru for example.

Today I left my Outlander in the dealer

. At first they didn't hear the noise but after a drive test the noise appeared very loud and they realized that it wasn't a normal sound, so, right now they must be figuring out what is the problem. I will post any news about what they found.

Well... This was my experience with the dealer:
Yesterday they checked the Outlander and they couldn't reproduce the noise. So, the technical guy called me to specify how was the noise and when was happening because he couldn't reproduce it. We drove for 15 minutes the car and when we arrived again to the dealer the noise appeared and he listened to it clearly. He took the Outlander back to the shop and he told that he was going to call me when the car is ready. They called me TODAY and said that the Outlander is ready. For my surprise the service sheet said that my complaint wasn't show during tests so they closed the case. I spoke with the service manager that yesterdya the guy who was checking my car lisened the noise, that I also show him all the recordings that I made from the noise and he told me that I had to make a new appointment with an unique stupid face.

I wanted him killed at that moment!!! I waited all this time for nothing?!?!? He told me that the verified all the "20 points", whatever" and all was working properly but they couldn't reproduce the sound that i described before. In conclusion: I had to took my car back since i was late for work and i returned the rented car, the outie still doing teh f***ing noise worst than ever and placed a new appoinment

.

That is brutal - I went through a drive-through today again and specifically stopped and started so I could listen for the noise - I am sure the employees thought I was some kind of loony. I denfinitely noticed it again but I am still not postive it is the same issue as yours. I can't hear it with my windows up...yet. I am still trying to determine whether I believe I have an issue or not. I am leaning towards 'not' at the moment.
Sorry to enter this discussion. I don't own an Outlander or Mitsubishi but am interested in the 2007 Outlander. I've been looking through the posts here for information on this vehicle and had a listen to your audio clips.
The sound is VERY similar to what my Audi did due to a glazed belt. At idle, no noise. Just above idle as the belt speeds up, it squealed like a pig until the rpm stablized and all the pullies caught up. the belt needed to warm up before this occured. In my case the alternator had its own belt and it would be really bad under high electrical loads, but probably different here.
I've not sure, but I would assume the Outlander uses one continuous belt. I would loosen the tensoner for it and take it off. Check for shiny surfaces or just replace it regardless. Also spin all the pulleys being turned by that belt by hand to make sure everything turns easily and something isn't seized or too hard to turn for the belt.

Hmmm. That sounds logical. I'm going to check the belt.

I just listened and I would like to add my .02 worth if it helps. The noise the you recorded sounds like a hydraulic squeal. I have heard something like it before on the planes I fly on (C130s). Does the power steering fluid look like it is frothing or has fine bubbles in it? Watch it when you run your engine again. I'll try to see if my Outie makes the same noise tomorrow (with the garage door down for extra entertainment

).
Rob-gettin' high off the fumes again

I'm having the same issue with my 2 month old 2007 Outlander. If I drive slowly between the same RPM ranges stated by phaserkb with the engine warm, I hear a loud squealing noise. If the car is shifted into neutral or park, it won't make the noise. The squeal can only be created while the car is moving in drive. Weird, eh? I'd have the dealer check it out but I don't they'll have a clue as to what's causing it.

My UK outlander 2008 model made strange noises the dealer had the car for half a day called me when it was ready the noise has gone but they will not tell what the problem was!!! They just said a bolt was missing, really helpful No other dealer treated me this way, I only wanted to know if something else was damaged at the same time.
Even phoned Mitsubish UK to ask and they never phoned me back.
Mitsubishi make great cars they are just let down by their dealers

I just picked up my XLS last Friday and hope these aren't common issues. My questions are how many miles do those of you with the noises have on your Outties? And when were yours built (early/mid/late '07 or '08)?
Thanks

I don't think it's too common. I haven't noticed it on my NOV 06 build

That's disconcerting. They should have told you whatever they fixed. I'd ask for a printout of the service sheet the dealer uses to track service. I had a bad experience at a quick lube place that supposedly changed my transmission seal and fluids. I drove less than 2 miles down the road and the tranny started slipping and rendered the car undriveable. I made it back to the shop and they tried to give a lame excuse that there must have been a bubble in the hose/line that caused it not to accept the fluid. The tranny was never the same from that point forward. Now i ask for the parts that were replaced after the service so that i can verify whats been done...and i stay away from quicky service places unless i'm able to stand over the guy and watch him doing the service.
Maybe you have a good relationship with this dealer or it's the only one close by, but if a dealer refused to tell me what they fixed i'd tell them to stick it and i'd be getting service elsewhere.
