After 1200 miles I would always mobil 1 Synthetic

Always always use oem oil filter

The dealer told me the factory use bedding oil to help the engine ware in slightly/Controlled way

Did you get that information from the same dealer that is selling you the filter?

There are so many variables that effect the ware of an engine (oil level, temperature, engine load,..), I fail to see what they could do to a filter in order to control ware.  I think somebody is taking you for a ride!

The car industry is the same as any other, the OEM filters are contracted out and the supplier changes all the time.

I have a 5 Year Full Synthetic oil change included when I got my XLS 3.0L and they use the Pennzoil Full Synthetic and they told me that It was the one that Mitsubishi recommended.

Its up to you but mitsubishi oem filters have a pressure realese valve in them. the last mitsubishi car I put a crap cheap filter it was blown apart dumping oil all over the road 2 miles from the repair shop.

Always always fit an oem filter why spend £21k on a car and save a £'s on a filter madness as for the cost for me my car a lease car so I dont pay any service costs.

Wave your warranty bye bye when your engine gives up the ghost due to a £5 cheapo filter

Read the post again!

I said about the bedding in oil used

the filter was a remark about using the correct the filter when changing the oil  I said nothing about the oil filter being used to bed the engine in just when you change the oil make sure you use an oem filter

Sorry, I took the word "Factory", as "OEM Filter".
And I'm not suggesting you buy a cheap filter, you can probably get a better quality after market filter for a less money than the OEM.

If you guys are so worried about the filter and you can't make it to the dealer, buying a decent aftermarket one will work just fine, maybe better. I use the mobil 104, and so far no troubles, there are many high end filters to choose from that include the relieve valve that some one on here was talking about, theres even a K&N to choose from, but why buy K&N when you can get the mobil, which is just as good for cheaper, minues the K&N has a drilled out hole for safety wire, in case you race and the car encounters high vibrations, but I doubt you guys are racing your outies anyway.

For those of you that switched to synthetic oil, what is the cost difference between convetional and synthetic at your dealer?

I'm having my first oil change tomorrow morning and may switch to synthetic, but last i checked with my other car it was like $30 more per change.  If it's still so high, I'll buy a case myself and have the dealer pour that in.  Are you using the same weight oil (5W30)?

Also, i've read some articles that say you should wait til at least 5K to even 10K miles before switching to synthetic.  Any thoughts?

You can switch to synthetic just fine at any time. Buy the case your self and do it your self too, its verry simple, drain, switch filter, and put in new oil, can't believe dealers charge an arm and a leg for a simple task.

The main reason North American vehicles are being spec'd with 5w20 oil has little to do with the engine or vehicle use.  It has mainly to do with EPA fuel economy ratings.  The thinner oil shows better results during fuel consumption testing and is therefore used by most manufacturers in an effort to get the best results possible.  Remember, the testing is done by an independant agency, but manufacturers must post the results on window stickers, etc.

It is one of the factors that a manufacturer can't change or they have to have the vehicle retested.  Same thing with the transmission delay reflash of the Transmission control module.  Because it can change emissions/economy, Mitsubishi, by law, must place a sticker under the hood showing the updated code levels and their effect on the emissions, etc.

I actually changed the oil from 5w20 synthetic I put in at the begining of the winter to a higher quality 5w40 synthetic and the engine starts much quieter and runs smoother all around.  Just anecdotal.

also,
What I notice in MPG is what weight oil your using thats all. Currently have 5w30 and MPG is at its worst. I think im going back to 5w20 syn.

so I went to my local walmart and see mobil 1 0w-20 Advance fuel economy.

Here is more info:

http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Oils/Mobil_1_0W-20.aspx

It says it can be used in 5w-20 engines and protect the same. I was about to get this but need more info.

Has anyone put that in? or recommend it?

I don't have any experience with synthetic or "0w" rated oils, but i'd love to see some real world results on the mileage figures for them.

I had my oil changed at the dealer and they used Mobil 5000 5w-30.  I didn't think it was doing so well until i recently took a 400 mile round trip and going there got 22.3 MPG @ 70-mph avg and returning got 24.6 MPG @ 74-mph avg.  Both legs were on full tanks with loaded vehicle (wife, 2 kids in car seats, luggage, a small dog and newly added hitch = 300+ lbs).  Funny thing too, the first leg there was in 2wd and the return trip was in 4wd Auto mode.

If 5w20 synthetic adds miles to those numbers i'd switch in a second.  Eager to hear the results.

I think the difference between 5w20 and 5w30 MPG wise is 1 or 2%..which is unnoticeable outside a lab.  I doubt the 0w20 will be much difference. I think it's more a product of Mobil's marketing department than the engineering dept.

I go to walmarts oil center, I only go to a chosen few though. I use Castrol, because of some crap the Mobil has done with their synthetics that is related to using them in motorcycles I wont use Mobil. I actually use diesel oil in both of my sport bikes.

I also wont use synthetic before 10k miles.

Anyways, the walmart brand filters are made by champion labs, the same makers of the mobil filters. They also test the same. They are highly regarded on many vehicle forums.

well I'll guess I'll go ahead and buy the new mobil 1 0w-20 and test it out.

I had m1 5w-20 full syn before and the mpg was really great @ around 24-27.6 normal drive conditions.

So far on my observations on using mobil 1 5w-30 full syn right now @ 11,500 miles, I get about 22-23 mpg on highways and sometimes i get 23.2-24.3 on long trips (40 mins) and get about 290 miles out of a full tank. Based on differental temps/pressure here in seattle. MPG got bad/ok

So my next oil change is coming up and I am going to change to the 0w-20 adv. fuel econ. and see how it makes a difference.

Then using the same adv. fuel econ. oil next oil change after 0w-20, I will then use 0w-30.

Basically I am testing which oil from 5w-20(past), 5w-30(past), 0w-20(current), 0w-30(next), 10w-30(summer/future).

So far 5w-20 is the current winner in fuel economy.

Holy cow!  24-27 mpg!  That's crazy good.  What drive mode are you usually in (2wd/4-Auto/4-Lock)?  I may have to try the 5w20 synthetic stuff it that kinda mileage is the norm.

I only got 2wd on this! no awd...sadly

oh yeah the 24-27 mpg is on the freeway only. I havn't recorded city which i don't really care since I do alot of 40 min drive.

I use moble syn 5w20 with a pureone oil filter. Once the weather started warming back up I been getting 24 to 25 mpg. Thats actual miles calcuated from filling the tank back up not the display. I have used moble since having 2000 miles and so far all has been good. I do my oil changes at 3000 miles. I cant wait for it to get alittle bit warmer and have even better gas mileage. The last time I filled up I hit 340 miles from 1 tank.

alright people here are the results i observe after my oil change last week with M1 0w20 AFE.

I was totally amazed how well it worked! When i first saw this new m1 at wallyworld, I think it was just another marketing crap m1 has to put up. But I was wrong...

So i went ahead and bought it to try it.

Enough with the blahblahblah..well here is the results:

HWY: I got about 26.8-28.4 (AVG) for a 40 min drive @ 65-70 mph
CITY: about 18.1-19.3 (AVG)

That is all done not driving like a maniac/speeding/etc..

This time the other day, I tried to drive agressive like I said above but the mpg wasn't that bad.

Driving Agressive:

HWY: 23.4-25.1 (Same as above) but @ 75-80 mph at times
CITY: no reason to record b/c I just don't want any bodies to hit...slow down!

That was all done at outside temperature was around 43-45*F. Still pretty cold here!

Can't wait till things heat up to get more MPG! I am definitley sticking to this M1 AFE for a while.

hi tufduck. I am using the same oil you using too. m1 0w20 afe. I live here in houston and it is already hot down here and humid. So far so good and no problems at all. I am getting about your mpg and this oil is great!

I just had my oil change last month using m1 afe and told my dealer to check up it there is any metals in the oil filter and he said no. I wasn't sure if it protect well than the 5w/10w and he said its good. So far since living in a hot climate, I am definitely sticking to this oil for a while.
