Hello, Im new to these forums.

I have a few questions for the more knowledable of you. I am completly new to the car world. I know nothing really about vehicles, but I want to learn.

I am buying an '89 Montero. This car will be for off-roading.

I really want to lift it, but I really have no idea on what I would need to buy. I have people that can install it, I just need to know what to get. For this model, what is a feasible lift size?

Also. What is the difference between a "Pajero" and regular Montero?

Thanks in advance.

Best lift option is a suspension lift...
For your 89, I assume it's a 3.0L v6? If so, you have a coil sprung rear end. For the rear coil spring suspension, options are available from Valley Springs in Dixon CA (don't have the number handy... sorry) as well as ARB, & Iron Man Suspension (australian firm). I know there are others but I don't recall the company names right now. Mostly out of Australia. Cost... ~$300-400 for the springs

For the front, you may want to look at replacing the stock torsion bars with a set from SwayAway, ARB, or Iron Man, then "torque" them to lift the front. You don't want to go too far or you will increase wear on your front axle's CV joints. Cost... unsure as I haven't replaced mine yet although they need it now.

W/ a suspension lift, you can raise as much as ~1.5-2" and the rear ~2-3". You can fit a 33" tire w/ this lift.

Alternate lift option is a body lift...
Contact Roger Brown at 4crawler.com since they're the only company that makes a Montero body lift kit. Uses UHMW lift blocks and grade 8 bolts. Various lift sizes available.

W/ a 2-3" body lift, and a 2" suspension lift, you can easily fit a 35" tire!

Pajero -vs- Montero differences...
Pajero = Montero. Montero used where spanish is widely used because Pajero is not a good word in spanish. It means someone who jacks off.. (hopefully that doesn't set of the sensor alarms

Other than that... the US received our Montero's one year after the rest of the world. That means your 89 is the equivalent of their 88.

Some options that were never offered here include...
diesel engines
turbo diesel engines
certain gas engine models
2 door 2nd gen models
2 door 3rd gen models
convertable models

Also for our canadian friends the Montero (and possibly other models) was devoid from their market for a number of years while they recovered financially in the US. Most decisions on what are brought ashore here are made by Mitsu N. America corporate.
