03-04 Evo VIII Transmission issues??

a friend of mine is in the market of purchasing either an 03-04 evo VIII, now from what i have read from many threads and same with him. That there is a big concern with the transmission, clutch, transfer case, etc. Now if that seems to be the issue for those specific years and if he has no choice of gettting one within those years, what should he be aware of when purchasing, or what would be needed as far as replacement or upgraded in order to alleviate that problem. And if this is a problematic issue, has it been improved for the 05+ models, thanks! for the input!

If he is going to get a used Evo try for a stock one and test drive it. listen to the drivetrain, it will whine in first and second normal but if you can here it all the time there maybe something wrong. if the clutch is hard to press down it has been replaced. the stock clutchs only last on average t about 25k with alot of launching and racing. I have 41k on my stock clutch and I have a modded car that has had ZERO problems with anything other than maintanece. The 05s were not any different other than a front LSD and active Center Diff. The transfer case can blow out if you dont launch the car by slipping the clutch a little bit so if you drop te clutch alot youll be paying for it later.... personally id rather buy a new clutch than a new TCase. The syncros are tough they do feel notchy on shifts but its normal. at high revs and high power they are usless just ask F.O.G. he has a 2.3l 50Trim making nearly 500AWHP and shifts at 8200RPMs it grinds on his. Alot of people have trouble with syncros but most who do get it during the break in period. so if it is past that and un abused youll be in good shape.... oh for what it is worth I bought mine stock with 12k miles on it it is now 41k and no problems at all and i have an 03 so does F.O.G. Yup, Emonz is right. I am having some tranny problems. Nothing that I can attribute to Mitsubishi. Its my own fault for pumping double the horsepower thru it than what it was built for and bumping the rev limiter back to about 8200RPMs. I wonder if Mitsu will warranty it LOLOLOL . So, if you want to play, you gotta pay. Shes going in for a full race tranny and a few other goodies next Friday. I cant wait. It will have the same tranny build as TTrix's 9 second race EVO. I'm gonna run it on BF Goodrich drag radials with the soft side wall to help cushin the transfer case. And learn how to properly launch it. Hopefully, I can do my part driving cuz I know the car will put down some big nembers if I can do my part. I should have a bunch of parts for ya Emonz[:D]

what parts do you have coming out of your car? just the turbo and injectors or is there more??

I'll have those for sure. I think that is all you might be interested in. But, I'll also have a set of 264/272 cams and I might have to upgrade my clutch if the one I have wont hold the extra power. So I may have an ACT clutch with only like 1500 miles on it. I checked my invoices and TTrix just had it listed as "race disk" on the last upgrade, so when they pull the tranny to do the upgrade, I'll have them see which one it is. I'll keep you posted

I'll keep you posted well if your clutch is in any decent shape figure that in as well as the cams I have been looking at cams for a few months now and I will need them before I can swap the turbo

Yeah definitely try to buy a stock Evo regardless of what year. I personally like the Active Center Diff on the 05+ Evo's. The 05 trannies are pretty much the same as the 03 and 4's as Emonz said expect the lsd's. I always hear people say there is an improvement in strength on the 05+ but I don't know how true that is. It might be the simple fact that the 05's are a bit harder to launch cause of the new 5K RPM launch limiter. But once u start to do serious mods, regardless of year, be prepared to pull money out your pockets. yeah, thats right! they did change the Transfer case for 05. And thanks for all those stickys you put up. the info is definately useful.
