We're considering buying a 2003 Sport. I was very impressed with it. Problem.....the transmission seems to slip a little...but only occasionally. Seems to do it in 2nd or 3rd at low rpm. I can see the tach jump up just a bit and it shudders a bit. I looked at and smelled the fluid...it's red and does not smell burned. I know the Mitsubishi's require their own fluid. If this was just serviced and someone put the wrong fluid in it would that result in the symtoms I described? Would a flush and fill at the dealer be a good idea at this point? If a flush and fill solves the slipping, can I assume there was not long term damage to the tranny?
Thanks for the help.

Sometimes flushes help these situations but rarely.  A better solution would be to have the seller do this and see if it corrects the problem.  Then, based on results, determine the worth of the vehicle.  Also, knowing the mileage would help people in recommending solutions

Oops....it has 80k on it.
Seller is going to have it checked and flushed if necessary.
Thanks!

Those symptoms sound like it has the wrong fluid, or the tranny is worn out.

Update....
The fluid was recently changed by an indy tranny shop.

A powerflush and fill at the dealer seems to have resolved the issue. They said not to worry about damage, that the fluid was still brand new and was not burned at all.

Opinions?
Thanks!

Well if you've taken it for a nice cruise at operating temps and it doesn't slip like it used to then I'd STILL factor out the cost of a used tranny and make an offer minus that cost.  That way if it goes you won't feel as bad!!
