ORIGINAL: antlip Why are you taking all your songs off itunes and putting them onto cds to put onto your harddrive? Just leave them on the ipod. ...and for the iPod impaired....? So, I take it nobody really knows what physical formats (as in DVD/CD) the MMCS will accept music from, nor what logical discformat can be used, apart from the obvious music CD. Cheers, -Morten

ORIGINAL: rcpax Can't do that either, since the MMCS will rip directly from CD only. There is no way, for now at least, for you to save your homebrew MP3 to the MMCS. That's not entirely true, at least if I understand what you're saying. I've loaded a ton of songs burned from iTunes to the MusicServer. It still shows whatever you named the playlist/CD first, but if you put the artist name in front of the album title that works fine (for example, instead of "Back in Black" the playlist is named "AC/DC Back in Black") By the way, I'm at 86 CDs and counting. Over half are CDs burned from itunes with over 20 songs each. You got me totally wrong. Saving CD tracks ripped from your itunes/mp3 then ripping it to the Music Server is one thing, copying mp3s directly to the MMCS is another. I meant the latter. I think it's clear to everyone here that the Music Server will take CD audio tracks without problems as long as you burned it correctly.

I assume that the MMCS system will accept both standard WMA (standard CD files) and MP3... other than that, your on your own. I doubt that it will read anything else, because there just isnt any other formats that are as widely used, and readable. Nor is there anything that I know of that compresses the standard size of a track as well, and as intact as the MP3. Not to say there isnt anything else, just that its the fastest, best, and most used.

mp3 is a dinosaur. AAC (mp4) is quickly becoming the new standard. It compresses better and sounds better than mp3. mp3 is also currently tied up in litigation over rights issues. If the entity that owns the rights now loses, you may see it disappear altogether. iTunes Music Store is entirely AAC (80% market share) and the recent anouncement of EMI removing all copyprotection on ITMS will continue to solidify AAC in the digital music format wars. Hopefully Mitsubishi will release a firmware upgrade to license AAC in the future.

Nor is there anything that I know of that compresses the standard size of a track as well, and as intact as the MP3. Not to say there isnt anything else, just that its the fastest, best, and most used. It has to do more with the codec. You're correct, the MMCS has both WMA and MP3 codec, and will play MP3 and WAV from CD Data. But moving MP3 and WAV to the MMCS w/o ripping to CD Audio format is still not possible, yet. IMO, the MMCS uses a proprietary codec for its Music Server, and the standard MP3 and WAV codecs for its CD function. I really don't see the point of ripping MP3 and WAV to CD Audion then have the Music Server rip it back to its proprietary MP3 format again. MP3 and WAV are already lossy formats, and reencoding them back to another lossy format just degrades the audio further. But it's just me. I'd rather burn all my MP3s to a Data CD and leave them like that. The Music Server too takes too long to do one CD anyway.

I understand that MP4 is rapidly gaining ground... but the standard is still mp3...

We (in general) still use these "dinosaur" technologies. And I doubt upgrade to AAC is a firmware thing, well we can all hope it is, but at this point I am inclined to believe that codecs in these consumer electronics are still hardware based, using specialized chips to decode and encode.

Cheers, -Morten antlip, I like having the songs on the music server because I don't usually carry my ipod everywhere, and I think the sound quality is better than through the current ipod hookup. I'm still hoping for a dedicated ipod connection that lets you view and control the ipod from the NAV screen! morten, here's what most people have discovered in a nutshell: Music server will rip and play audio cds, including burned ones. The system will PLAY mp3 cds (and WMA, i think) and audio dvds, but audio dvds will not show artist/title info the system will NOT play mp3 dvds, period, or any other compression format. and rcpax, sorry for the misunderstanding. I think we're both trying to say the same thing.
