Could it be the little gnomes named "ding & dent" that get your car in parking lots? Theyre out there, man... theyre out there...

Did you just sand and repaint to fix the spot?

When you say cracks, where the the cracks and how big?  Are they happening where you fixed the rusted area?  May be the area wasn't properly cleaned before paint/bondo was applied.

Chipped paint is usually caused by road debris (rocks, etc.) hitting your hood at speed.  Maybe avoid driving behind large trucks, 4x4's, and semi's.

Dent's are usually your own doing since small flying debris usually don't have enough force to dent your hood.

HTH.

Yeah I have those on mine too, little rock pits in the paint and a couple have turned to rust. I have a couple on the side as well.
When I got my 02 Sport I think that the paint portion is the ONLY part in the Cosumer Reports Used Car Report Guide that was not an excellant rating, but actually a poor rating.
I was okay with a bit of rust in trade for more reliable engine/transmisson mechanics (among others).
You may have this issue as well on the Montero and could be dealing with this for a while to come .

Are you the 1st owner or is this a used vehicle?  Was the hood ever damaged and repaired?  Sounds like bad prep for their paint job.

Well... there you go.  I'm not a body and paint guy but I know you've got to prep it properly or the paint or bondo won't stick.  I suspect that's what happened with yours.
