Hi folks,  i just registered having read through most of the feeds that were a great source of help and information.  Really hoping there is someone out there who perhaps can help me out.  I have a 92 GTO (Non turbo) import that i have worked hard to restore to an immaculate condition although have had problems along the way with a TCU rebuild etc.....

My GTO is sick, stuck on the drive in limp mode? i think.  While cruising down the motorway there was a very slight hesitation in the power that did not seem to make any difference to the performance until i slowed down to a stop where it was obvious something was wrong.  The gearbox (auto) did not select any gears at all, no grinding noises, smells, smoke etc - engine was perfect.  I put it in drive and pressed the PWR switch on the console and the car began to move forward in what feels like 3rd or 4th gear.  I will only move when the PWR switch is activated.  With this i limped home (5 miles approx) enrout the gearbox oil light came on.

Having spoken to a couple of people in the trade they tell me the TCU is knackered and maybe the gearbox too and it is almost impossible to fix or source replacement TCU's as they are matched to the vehicle specifically and this will have to be done first to determine if the gearbox is trashed too.

Is there anyone out there who knows what the best method of diagnosing the fault and the TCU story.

Love my GTO but this sounds like £1000's to sort?  worse than that i have to walk past it every morning and use my wife's beamer.

I wouldnt imagine that each unit could possibly match ONLY the car it came with... all i can offer you is a site to get replacement parts for imported cars... www.japan-partner.com

Where in the UK are you from? Remember 90% of the members are from the USA so they might not understand some things. (i lived in the UK for 14 years so i understand you just fine)

Well the TCU is not specific for that exact car i dont believe. It is only specific to the year and engine. In your case non turbo. You will know the box is done when you drain the fluid from it. Lots of metal = gear box is toast. Good luck!
