My girlfriend has a 2000 Montero Sport with 62,000 miles on it. The dealer recommends that she replace the timing belt but the repair is pricey $600) and she is short of cash. Can she post pone this for another 10,000 - 15,000 miles

Short answer, no.

4 years of heating up + revs + wear and 62k mi. on that poor ol rubber belt

If it breaks she will destroy the head (the valve stems will bounce off the tops of the pistons) inside of a few secs.

Take 10 minutes and pop (unbolt or whatever) the top part of the timing belt cover off and inspect it eh?

Burnt ?, frayed ?, teeth worn ? see any belt debris sprayed onto the surrounding area?
