1999 Full Size Montero - 104,000 Miles

Recently I am experiencing a good deal of secondary movement somewhere in the front of my Montero after hitting bumps. I suspected bad shocks but have confirmed that this is not the problem. Also have ruled out suspension bushings - or at least they appear OK.

I have noticed that the engine/trans is very easy to move and that it seems that this massive unit may be oscillating up and down for a few cycles when the chassis hits a bump. The rear mount is so soft that I can move the trans up and down just by pushing on it by hand. As far as I can see, none of the mounts are torn or separated - just really soft. Does anyone know if they are meant to be so flexible, or is there prececdence for Montero mounts going soft with age. Any other tips or possoible suspects would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

jrmdir

Sounds like the source of your engine movement is coming from your engine mounts.
They are not very expensive to replace and will solve this problem that you are having.
The rubber part of the mounts have begun to deteoriate due to age and engine wear such as oil leakage or such.mounts are a part designed to wear out.
