Hi someone has contacted me saying they are having trouble undoing the central nut in order to change the discs on a 1998 Wagon. They say it looks like approx 30mm. Do this sound about right. ie would it make sense to advise them to go to the tool shop and purchase a breaker bar and socket? or have they got the wrong idea of what they need to do. I don't actually know the person, the message came through the local Freecycle group as a cry for help!

Hi Jim. That nut is what holds the axel to the hub and that size sounds about right. Some vehicles use different sizes, but that's around the ball park. Now, this guy shouldn't remove that nut to change out his discs. The discs rotate on the hub which are held on by the lug nuts, not that axle nut.
