i've got a 97 montero sport and i'm leaking a qt every two weaks, most of it burns of the exhaust pipe and gets sucked in the air conditioning. How difficult is the rear main, is it doable in a driveway, and what do i need to know before hand

check your valve covers for leaks in the rear

already checked the valve covers and replaced rear cam caps. i doubt its the oil pan but the flywheel cover covers the back of the pan and part of the exhaust has to be removed to take off the flywheel cover. I've pretty much conceeded to the rear main

First off, I'm no mechanic nor an expert w/ your mitsu.

That said, I'm sure it's probably doable but I haven't done this on a sport before..

If I had to do it, here's what I'd do....

1) Jack up your vehicle and put on jack stands or better yet drive up onto 4 ramps.
2) Disconnect both drive shafts from the transfercase.
3) Use 1 or better yet 2 hydraulic floor jacks to support the xcase & transmission.
4) Unbolt the tranny from the engine. There are plenty of bolts so make sure you get them all. If unsure, check w/ a service manual (not a chilton's haynes or other lesser aftermarket manual).
5) Unbolt the rear crossmember while balancing the xcase and tranny on the jack and lower to gain access to the rear of the engine block.

You should now have access to the back of your block where the rear main seal is.

I have helped others swap Mitsu Montero engines and also install xcase gears so I know you can pull the tranny, transfer case & engine from below.

Can be done in a weekend but factor in a week for any potential learning curve stuff.
