I heard around that GTs need premium gas. Is this true? And what would happen if you used just 87 octane if it is?

Mine HATES reg, CEL, unhappy sounds.. etc. I wouldnt suggest it. The difference at the end is like a couple dollars more... you bought the car, now you have to pay for it... shoulda thought ahead. Like Seb says 'dont be a cheap ass'

I have an 02 eclipse GT and I run 87 octane, and I have no problems and I've been running that for about 7 months... *shrugs* the car doesn't label it's perfered gas anywhere on it...

I believe the ecu actually changes the fuel maps and timing if it detects knock from using less than premium fuel

Dude, Sebs 110% right here, on both things. The car was DESIGNED to use premium fuel. Trying to run anything else will even in most places VOID your warranty (to a point). He also correct in this being a MAJOR reason why Mitsus (especially eclipses of the 4g63t vareity) get a bad rep.. you know how many idiots I knw running piss (87) thru thier t/c'd motors? Thats terrible for the car. It may not seem like it now, but I can guarentee that over time it WILL cause a problem. To those of you claiming that your car doesnt say its prefered fuel, that is likely. Remember that it was a STICKER on the inside of the fill cover, and a LOT of dealerships (mostly used cars) pealed them off (or never installed them to begin with) as to make it seem to run 87 thru em, that way they seemed cheaper to own and fuel. When people brought them back to Mitsu "under warranty" they claimed that the consumer peeled off the sticker, and they were thusly NOT liable for the damages done to cars. deadeclipse.com had a thing about it, and Ive heard of it happening. (Not just on Mitsus either, Benz, Ford, Lexus and a few others.) But TRUST me, those cars GT/GTS and the GST/GSX MUST run premium.
