My bet is that the cap is either leaking.. or you have a small inconsistant leak in a coolant hose

other than buying a chilton or haynes...

you know of anywhere i can pull up a diagram.. or schematic or something... so that i can do it myself...

think i got it figured out...

heater core hose, or one of them right next to it... either way i'm replacing both now.... thanks guys

Sorry bud.  I've been busy and for some reason back right after I first promised I was thinking you had it solved.  Well just saw your other post now and then I see your next post saying it's possibly your heater core hoses which are being replaced.  Yes, those should be checked and I'm surprised I didn't suggest it since I've had that failure myself on the way to a local 4x4 park.  Doh!!  My bad.

Let me know if you still want the diagram.
