just wondering when it is that i should be putting the Outlander in 4x4 mode, what speed is my question. thanks.

If you have winter wheels without the sensors, I would say anytime you want to prevent the ACS from kicking in, because it forces you to reset the "service required" on the computer.

my winter wheels/tires are the stockers. ive only had them on for maybe 250 miles so all of the tread is still brand new. but anyways, whats the proper time to put it in 4x4 with the stockers?

I know what you asking, look in the manual to see if there are any cautions as to mph. I didnt see any but theres some other things i missed so look yourself.

I put mine in 4WD in heavy rain it keeps in on the freeway better. I dont watch mph when I put it in and out when I need to, I hope the computer keeps me from killing it. Its not a standard type 4WD its magnetc coupled. I have a standard 4WD truck and would never think of engaging at a high speed.

4WD -accelerating from stop or pulling trailers, for maximum traction and minimize tire tread wear of front wheels.
AWD -off-roading. automatic disribution of torque on all wheels. automatic switching between 4wd and fwd.
FWD -highways, to save gas.

that's how I understand it.

i use it all the time when driving on the freeway...
it seems the car is steadier and handles better on 4wd lock at high speeds
once we test drove an awd acura rdx on a twisty road and got lots of body roll (car was full), afterwards back on the same road with the outlander on 4wd and we all agreed that it handled far better than the rdx

ok, but i still havent heard the answer to my question. at what speed is it safe to put it into 4wd? not from start, right? i do have to be moving am i correct?

You can put it in 4wd while moving or stopped. Atleast I have.

Speed doesn't matter. It simply an electrically controlled clutch disk. The only time there might be an issue is if you have both front wheels spinning at a different speed than the rear wheals(ASC off and spinning tires when actually engaging the 4wd). Doesn't matter if you are going 10mph or 100mph as long as all 4 wheels are rotating at the same speed (even differences are "probably" ok as the clutch most likely doesn't engage instantly but slips to engagement). The clutch disk just engages the rear driveshaft to the rear differential. All side to side wheelspin is controlled by the ABS system on the brakes(as long as ASC is on).
