Why do you need to get a new ECU?

Just get the ECU that is for your car. If it is FWD you need  FWD ECU and the same with AWD. Also, if your car has an a/t or a m/t then you need to get the ECU for that.

Yeah its werd if the car didn't come with an ecu. And it doesn't matter if the car has a 20g on it, like sebba said just get awd,fwd,5speed, or auto,turbo,n/a. And if you got a 20g on it and the supportng mods, I suggest you get(if you haven't already) get either a air fuel controller, or dsmlink. And dsmlink is like hondata s300 for a teg (if you didn't know) where you can program pretty much anything you want on it from rev liiters to new redline, to takin out the govenor,.... and its only like 100 bucks more than a s300. But if you want something cheaper get an afc whch will run you about $300

Well i know for sure that the ecu is crap if there is one in there.  When we traded, the mechanic who did the diagnostics said it for sure needs a new ecu. I really don't know **** about dsm's or really any type of car for that matter. where would the ecu in the car? see these type of things i don't know. thats why i come to yall.  What i wanna know is if i buy say a used 2g eprom ecu for a  gst,mt. will that suffice until i am able to get one of those dsmlink packages. Will it hurt the car if i drive on it for sometime?  I had a friend that said skip all that and just get a stock ecu and put a chip on it? will that work or is he just a ****tard? i need all the help i can get, so thanks for yall who already gave your input.  sebba, sabba whatever yo name is. appreciate it!

well if it's a 96 gst then you need one off of a gst with a m.t. for fwd. and for the gsx and gst's the ecu is behind the stereo. so you'd have to take out the cd player and the trim piece around it and you should also take off the driver side kickpanel on the right side. then you'll have total access to the ecu
