So I've tried fixing everything else since my heat died and no air is coming from the vents so my next step is the heater control unit...but im stuck on that too.
How do I take out the control unit?

If you're talking about the controls, then it's quite difficult.

First take out the vents above the controls by popping them out.
then you'll have to pull out 3-4 control sliders that hook to:

The hot/cold air switches
the Direction switches (Defrost, feet, feet/face, or face, etc)
and the switch that controls recirculation air or outside air.

then unhook the various wire clips.
You'll probably need some needle nose pliars to pull of the control sliders for the doors.

If your heat selector switch feels weird when you turn it to heat (mine did) then it's possible that the selector cable has a kink in it. remove the passenger side console panel, and get your flashlight. you should be able to see if the cable leading from the rear of the heat/cold selector is kinked. I removed my stereo and straightened the cable by hand, and it hasn't given me any trouble since.
