I've got a loose wire, it connects on the firewall just to the right of the ID plate.  It's black with a yellow stripe.  I know it's a ground for 'something' but can't figure out where it was connected. It's about 6-8 inches long.  I thought I'd investigate further b4 replacing alternator, HOPING it might be the problem.  Thanks.

Just bolt it down and see if that fixes it?

Without going out and looking at my 1993 TR Magna V6 I think you are referring to the base timing connection. There is a wire there on the firewall that comes to a dead end. When setting the base ignition timing it is grounded. Best to read the correct procedure before trying it though as it works on the ecu.

Stretching the wire from the point where it connects to the firewall, does it reach any part of the wiring harness, or a component? I'm thinking of the EVAP Purge Solenoid - could be attached to the intake manifold.

hello. that ground goes onto the intake. stretch the wire out as far as it goes and move it along the intake. you will see the bolt hole line up with the connector. that is a body ground and will NOT affect starting. the base time ground connector is on the passengers side of the fire wall and has a brown connector and the wire itself is about 2 inches long. usually its wraped in blue tape to the main body wiring harness. dont mess with it!! what kind of starting problem are you having??  will try to help!  greg....
