Sometimes when I turn the key it just clicks, all of the accessories turn on but the engine doesn't even try to turn over. Then, after a few turns of the key it starts and sounds fine (strong even). I have replaced the battery and the starter. Actually, I've replaced the starter three times now. Last week when the current starter was put in the mechanic said all of my connections looked good and the only thing it could be was that my starter was a dud. It did start 100% of the time for the first few days and then the same old problem again. Any ideas?

Just for the record, it has a new clutch and idle speed control motor, and will start with a jump.

Spark plugs and spark plug wires. Use NGK for the spark plugs and factory Mitsubishi wires.

Do you hear a click coming from the passenger side footwell when it doesn't start?  Do you hear the starter solenoic click when you try to start it?  What year car do you have?

I will have the plugs and wires checked/replaced, it would be great if that's all it needs.

It is a 97. I hadn't noticed, but thinking about it, it does sound like the clicking is on the passenger side. I don't know if it is a solenoic click, what would that sound like?

You could either have a bad starter solenoid, but since your starter was replaced a couple a few times, I don't think that is the case.  The starter relay could be going bad, but usually when they go bad, they go bad.  The ECU could be on it's way out.  You could also have the "click click start" problem many 3s's have.  Read this thread to see if the syptoms sound similar to your problem

The "click click start" thread hit the nail on the head! I'll be attempting the relay fix this week. I feel so much more optimistic now, thanks so much for the suggestions!
