Mods for the EVO might be less, not sure but the STi has a little better resale value it seems. I think the EVO is the eaisier to mod because of one main reason..The 4G63 motor has been around in Evos, eclipses, galants since the early 90s over 10 years on fine tunning whereas the 2.5L boxer motor in the STi is a first year of prodution in 2003/04

The stock for stock comparisen the EVO VIII runs consistant 14.0s and the STi I have seen run Mid 13s..I beleive the MR edition EVO stock does a mid 13 as well, keep in mind the STi motor is a bit weaker than everyone seems to think They have been know to crack ringlands after the 400AWHP platoe and pistons can be an expensive fix when you dont really have the extra cash

I am leaning more towards getting an EVO however I found some things very interesting I notices on evolutionforums.com there was a large number of members with 03 EVO VIIIs and they all had the same problems bad trannys 2-3gear shifts all ways grind and clutches needing replacment after only about 15k miles. there was even a few early production 03s that had spun bearings with under 10kmiles, now on paper that sounds bad but the warenty "should" cover that.. Mitsubishi has been very tough with what can be honered by warenty in the past. and I belsive the EVOs have some sort of "black box" that records your driving habits, so fi you like to race around and launch at 6k, then it breaks somthing and they look at what this "box" records and see that they will VOID your warrenty....this is just what I have heard however I will say a friend of mine raced his EVO all day launching it hard a few times a day well his transfer case went out on him at 1200mile on the odo and they still fixed it under warrenty

IMO the EVO is your best route it must have more parts out than the STi because of the time that the 4G63 has been out there

Im an Evo fan n also an STi fan, but I'd still prefer Evo's neway. I heard in 03' that the Evo 8 actually has the strongest inline 4 engine in America, which really isn't bad for an inline 4 engine. Now the STi has horizontally opposed engines n they have 300+ horses but really their engines arent as strong as the Evo engines. Yea it has more power n torque but their engines can break quickly n can be expensive to fix since they are horizontally opposed...not like the inline 4's. I'd say get the Evo, or wait till the Evo 9 comes out next year...btw the Evo 9 looks exactly like the 8 only wit a slighty different front bumpers, it looks alot slimmer tho.

One of the things that would make the Evo a better choice for straight line racing (if thats your thing) is that you only have to rip through 5 gears instead of six. Six gears are great to stay in the powerband during cornering, but that is its purpose. It is my belief that if you could have the exact same reactions in each car, The EVO would win because of its gearing. Honestly, Tear into a boxer engine is not my idea of a good time, leave it to the Porche's. Inreply to the earlier post, Evo has a 4G64, not a 63.(longer stroke).

Acually the 2000+ Eclipse galant stratus all have 4G64 engines and the 91-99 Eclipse turbo galant VR4 and now the EVO share the 4G63 engine only thing with the evo is the motor is reveresed the throttle body is on the opposite side as the older cars and now the evo has a twin scroll 16G rather than the eclipses that had 14b turbos form 91-94 and had a T25 from 95-99

Ok back on the which do I want thing I Just got myself an EVO last week it is an 03 black 12k miles loaded.. this car is the best buy I love the way it drives and corners it stickes to the srteet like you would never believe...GO WITH THE EVO

My mistake, I got confused. You have to put the 4g64 crank into the 63. Now we have a stroker.

If the EVO 9 has VVT it will be a much better driving car. While VVT will increase the HP a bit the main benefit is that you will get high torque over a much wider rpm range. It increases drivability dramatically.

I read a lot of both cars, sti is more sofisticated but evo said in words of the owners of sti evo is a lot better. Any car of any manufacturer have mechanical problems. The evo 9 is the best way to go in the right direction and the smart choice. In my opinion.
