Hello I am new here and like to ask a couple of ?s I can buy a 93 MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE with a 1.8L cranks right up but it is knocking but it sounds like its in the top end not in the bottom end have any ideas?

Also I can get a 94 ply laser with a good 2.0L but it has a bad trans and was woundering if the parts will swop between the 93 eclipse and the 94 ply laser?

Both are nontubro and have auto trans.

Thanks for any input

Jim

No the tranny's won't swap they are 2 different blocks and will likely have 2 different bolt patterns. To be sure take a look under the hood at where the tranny meets the engine and check the bolt pattern yourself. As for the knocking... If it's coming from the top end I'd say possibly a bent valve, loose rockers, or the timing may be off slightly. Depends how loud the knock is and how often it's heard and where exactly. Only fromt eh left or right or center, or is it heard through all 4 cylinders? If all 4 then it's timing if only 1 or 2 then I'd say bent valves. Anything from 92-94 bodywise will work on each other. But the engines have to be the same for any other parts to work.95-99 are the same I believe and 2000-04 if I'm not mistaken. And 89-94 are the same interior and under the hood but there are subtle (and some not so subtle) differences from '92 on (Like the headlights that pop up prior to '92).

Thanks for the quick reply. The knock sounds like it is coming from the driverside of the engine and it is load.

I measured the top 2 center bolts where the trans bolts to the block and they where both 5in apart on both of them

There are MANY more than just those 2. You have to look at ALL the bolts and not so much measure but look at teh placement as well as guidepins for the trannies. If the casings are the same shape physically then I'd say go for it they should swap nicely. But if they aren't then be carefull. Make sure you check the mount positions so you know that the tranny is going to bolt right up to the frame as well as the engine.
Now for the knock on the driver's side... There is another post asking about the knocking sound and I wrote a fairly extensive bit on that one there. Read that post and it will give you some direction for starting to check the knock. If you can get any more specific it'll help out alot. Is it a full blown knock or a little ping... Perhaps a ticking? Is it only at certain times or is it constant through the full range of the engine or does it happen at a specific time?
