I have both. Scuff plates look really cool. The rear bumper step protector looks great, no real protection needed though, because I don't load "risky" stuff  and if I would load something risky I would open the bumper. I don't like the way the step protector looks without the rear bumper styling panel. If it's protection you're looking for, maybe you can get the protective plastic foil for the bumper?
Both are just for ethetics, because they don't really improve your car. I have the fog lamp kit with silver rings, silver stlyling kit on the bottom of the doors (with almost a sideskirt look) and the rear bumper styling panel which looks great with the bumper step protector and rear parking sensors (can't live without them).
My scuff plates:

Maybe, if my wife will let me , I'll go for the grill (€ 890):

they do provide a some level of protection, but they definitely add styling flare to an already stylish SUV

I also have them  both. Besides the look  in time they are  useful  protecting the rear bumper and the step bumper. I also have the trunk tray XL (MZ313911), useful when carry dirty or muddy stuff.

I only have the scuff plates from day one. Just by looking at how dirty the are is getting I think they are required (a simple black plastic type should've been standard IMO).

For the bumper protector, I will be getting the black foil from Europe. My Outlander is a LS and all the exterior trim is black; the stainless steel model available in North America is too fancy for my car. If you have a XLS it would be nice though.

In any case, if I end up not liking the looks of the black foil, I'll go for the ss option. The foil is cheap enough to be disposable (under $40 CAD).

Here it is the link to the Euro Accessories Catalogue. The rear bumber protection foil is on page 9.
