'97 Eclipse; stops running`

My wife's '97 Eclipse (2L, no turbo) just stops running. I replaced the [clogged] fuel filter and it starts easier, runs smoother and gets better mileage. Before when it stopped it started right up again and drove home. Now it won't restart for a while, and quits after idling for 5 or 10 min. Could I have put the filter in backwards? Where can I find a drawing (without buying a manual) to show me how it goes?

Thanx.
Johnny

The filter should have a direction of flow indication on it, if it makes any difference.
Now here is a story that may get you thinking. I once had a 260Z that I came out to one day in a public parking area. The gas cap had been opened by someone. A short time later the car would buck and mis at high rpm, high acceleration, I did a lot of that back then. After much diagnosis I replaced the fuel filter. Car ran fine. I had once been told that sugar in gas does not disolve and that it will simply clog the gas filter. My guess was that someone had put sugar in my tank and it had clogged the filter. There was no damage to the engine. When I did take the filter off I blew through it and for sure it was blocked, but I could not see any dirt. You may have something in the tank that is clogging the filter again???

hi there. it sounds like a possible fuel pump problem. we have seen the same symptoms on many mitsus we work on i9n our shop. what happens is the pump getrs hot and will shut down till it cools off and will continue to do this.
